First time growing outdoors First topping was done above the 4th node I now have a plant nearing 8ft tall is it safe to top again

I’d guess you’re too late at this point. Normally you do your double topping fairly soon after your first topping ~ 3 nodes/couple weeks. This keeps the height down and from it forming the dreaded V shape - which can be a real weak spot once it starts flowering. You’ll want to make sure you have your two main stems braced as the plant will tend to split at the V.

Love these plants

No topping needed at this point. Let ‘em grow and flower but be sure to get stakes and other support items up before plants bud out. I’ve used 6 and 8 ft stakes around my plants with different levels of twine wrapped around them and stake them in early July when they show their growth potential. For your tall plant you could even put in just two stakes and attach each large branch to its own stake. Good luck.
