How long should it be before transplant?

I use coffee filters cause the root doesnt stick like it can with paper towel and plant when i see 1/4 inch root max.

but some growers wait a lot longer. I dont want to risk damaging the root.

Don't overthink this and make things harder or look for exact answers where not needed. The goal behind putting the seeds in water and/or a wet paper tower is it see if it pops. Adds a bit of "knowing" when and if it does to your seed germination equation without having to wait for it to break surface. When it pops in the paper towel, just plant the darn thing. Now that you know it germinated, it'll grow!

another way and you never touch the seed unless you want to.. is soak seed in RO water and hydrogen peroxide mix for 10-13 hours out of light,than before planting have a jiffy pellet soaking in the same solution mix separately, than when it’s expanded take out and cut off netting, than i’ll take my solo cup of pro mix ( any medium will work) make a hole, put some of the jiffy pellet in the hole, take the cup with seed, pour out some water, don’t lose the seed! leave a bit of water and dump in the hole and cover up. that’s it, never failed yet.,
a seedling heating mat does help, i use one.,

Thanks for the info, being new to this its hard for me to put everything I am learning in complete sentences. You seem to not have that problem anymore.

This is my opinion ... many new growers tend to over-think things. They want to micro-manage their plants in hopes it will be "perfectly loved and happy" ... and end up doing too much and harms the plant. Soooo .... why you get tempted to throw everything including the kitchen sink at your babies to try to fix a problem ... PAUSE. Do one thing, and then wait to see the results before trying another. Also, old growth rarely ever heals ... look at your new growth to determine if you've solved your problem.

I use the paper towel method (I've used coffee filters too) and I plant once the seed has cracked and I see a little bit of a "tail." I usually use peat pellets but I'm trying a few in rockwool pellets this year to see which I prefer.

Thanks, in my first planting I did something similar with rapid rooter. Unfortunately with a few less steps than your plan and the plants failed to thrive. My fault for starting the grow with just enough knowledge to be dangerous.
