I've never planted reg seeds AND I've never grown plants outside. My plan is to start them this week. My main concerns are what method to use when moving outside, how critical is the timing for cutting down the males so the pollen doesn't disrupt the bud grow and finally how much direct sun do I need to have? I can plant where I get direct sun maybe 5-6 hors/day and then filtered sun for most of the day.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

Morning HowardC, It's critical to cut out the males prior to the pollen pods opening so you want to inspect the plants everyday. Where are you located? My 4month old outdoor vegging plants will show sex late july to aug. but some will show balls earlier.
Of course placing the plants in the correct time zone for daylight hrs you want at least 14hrs of sunlight so check your local sunrise/sunset times for your area. I put my pots in a place that gets 6-10 hrs of direct sunlight sometimes longer and i move them to shade if the temps run above 95f cause i grow in 15gal plastic nursery pots. Drill lots of holes in them. Be ready to water daily as needed. I find my male plants grow taller faster and have longer spaces between nodes so if you see this happening separate them abit just for safety sake until balls show or you see fem with a hair coming from the bract.

Good question.

When you say 5 - 6 h/day, how about later in the year with shorter days and lower angle of the sun?

In case your not familiar with how they look

I pulled this male immediately once I had clarification by seeing the stem (cock ) holding the balls.
As for lighting, you'll probably be ok.
I get about the same, just make sure u place them so their not shadowing other plants once they mature.
6 feet apart is the very minimum, 8 feet is better, but still a little close.

If your going for big plants.πŸ˜‰

Sorry, couldn't help myselfπŸ˜‰

You'll have plenty of time to remove males once they show themselves.

Females will show hairs and that's when you'll know for sureπŸ˜‰

I'm in coastal SE NC the best place on earth BTW 😁. The sun will be directly over the plants for 6-7 hours during the shortest days of summer/fall.
I plan to plant directly into the ground. Two years ago I dug out the native soil in the grow area and replaced it with good grow soil. The area is easy to water every day.

I'm no looking for plants that tall
I can see how shading can be a problem. I'll train the plants similar to the way I do indoors.
How gradual does the move outside have to be for photo and auto?
Thanks.

It was explained to me as similar to tanning to not get a sunburn. Start in a shaded area for 20mins., next day sun for 10, next day, 30, etc. Shouldn't take more than 4-5 days to be used to it. This is the same with most plants, they build up a layer to endure the strong rays.
