I'd argue that the drying and curing process are just as important as the actual growing and everyone overlooks it. You could grow an incredible harvest and it can be ruined by improper drying and curing. A simple hygrometer can and will increase the quality of the bud. When people are growing they'll spend so much money on the smallest of things to increase their yield but then not care about curing conditions which will have a bigger impact.

I’m trying something i read in a curing thread here on thcf about placing a box of dry buds in a frost-free freezer for a couple weeks and why it works, 90% humidity at around 5°F. We’ll see.

Obviously this wouldve prevented the problem had I one before hand cuz I wouldnt have dried the bud out too much in 1st place. Ill admit I didnt have everything I needed for a smooth grow from start to finish. You live & you learn. Still I appreciate all the advice guys!

I was told to burp only if it reached above a certain %, being 63
Otherwise leave them closed.

I had multiple jars over 63 now settled down to 61 and keeping closed unless they hit 63
I got 3 jars on the lower scale, two 57's and one 58 which have remained closed and have been for a week almost 'not gaining humidity'
I plan on opening them all up at the end of the month for 5mins in 60humidity then back to close XD

I'm sure everyone has there own little ways of doing things though

Okay so i bought hygrometer but im still not sure how to read it. Do you take reading from 1st number to get reading on humidity or do you take 1st number & 2nd number & take difference between numbers to get reading?

I don't think this is going to work out well for you, I'm surprised you haven't got visible mold going on already

I quoted him, so him; it's bad advice don't do it that way or you'll ruin all your bud

One number is probably the temp and one humidity. Put the hydrometer in the jar overnight to get a reading. I also used part of a raw carrot to add some moisture back to some overly dry bud until the meter read 62%,then removing the carrot and adding a boveda 62 pack. Cured and burped for 3 weeks and now smokes and taste good. Good luck!

Really? it was advice that Aqua had given me lol

'So basically keep.them closed don't even burp them until they hit 63 or 64 but if they don't hit it then just keep.it closed regardless? What about the build up of gases ? I guess that doesn't matter if they're so low RH ?
-
Yup just seal em and keep for a few weeks at that. Then dry a bit more. '

He sells @ 60 and prefers a bit lower for himself for smoking
So if that's not the way to do it then whats your way? =p

I have 3.. one 57 and two 58's that I haven't even opened yet just left sealed and now I have 5 61's that are just sealed till the end of the month ?

If I miss even one burping cycle often the weed smells off, I've thrown more than one ounce into the hash bin that way

That's the purpose of burping on a regular basis, to change the atmosphere in the jar, letting the buds slowly lose moisture, aka curing

Like he said, its probably temp and humidity. Temp should be below 70°F, humidity close to 60% in the jar. The orange peel, carrot, potato, freezer etc raises humidity and softens the buds, you can just breathe in the jar too. If the buds get too moist, pour them out for a couple minutes, check for any mold and rejar. Mold looks like cotton threads and smells like moss, earthy. Toss moldy buds, i haven’t seen any suitable use for them.

I'm so confused now
So the way I'm doing it is wrong or what? =p
If they're already low there would be no need to burp though? like the 57s
and if I've brought them down to 61 is there a need to burp daily still?

One thing i’ll add, i leave a piece of paper in the jar for recording dates etc. The paper works as a hygrometer too, you can “feel” the true humidity better than squeezing the buds.

Ya boveda is the way to go. You should use them in your jars right away. But as far as drying and curing will differ depending the climate where you live. Your plants will either dry to fast or slow. Slower is good. I live in the northeastern part of US it’s fall Temperature drops and gets dryer so I hang about 4 or 5 days. Then slow it down by putting in brown paper bags.and move the buds once a day. Then plastic turkey bags with boveda packs and it will cure the rest of the way

Idk, smell a jar and tell us what you think, that's the only way to know what you got going on!? Here's a link with some info that might help

No you don’t have to burp them still. But you should have boveda or any kind like it.

You should think about curing like fermenting. Because that's what it is. Ferments like to breathe a certain amount or else they accumulate shit you don't want. Like populations of mold or bacteria.

You don't have to over-complicate it. Just bring it down gradually to the desired moisture content... your senses are much better at determining that than RH. RH is kind of a weird way to test for it, but it does give us something of a relative gauge.

If you don't want to acquire the feel for it, then just do what distributors do and dry it thoroughly and put an adsorptive packet in their container.

edit: to add; weed is a perishable. It has a shelf life. If you're storing it for so long that you're not sure if you need to burp it, you should probably consider storing it in a different way.
