Thrips and Tobacco remedy

So Im 95% sure Ive got thrips and read that tobacco soaked in water over night then boiled let to cool and sprayed onto the plant works so im guna try it and will keep you informed if it works or not.
My plan was to first try it out on one fan leaf just to make sure there was goin to be NO serious negitive effect and if not spray the whole plant Anyone who might have done this would like to hear your outcome?

So.. the plants are in week 6 (from seed) of of veg and ive noticed this for a while but like others came to the conclusion it was residue from folliage spraying but I then notcied the same thing on my clones so though had better look into this more. They are growing in coco and are under fluros. I sprayed the whole plant last night and noticed no change in the plant quality this morning and the thrips still there. Going to try spraying everyday for a week. The other plant I sprayed with Yates Success (10g p/ltr of Spinosad) so will be interesting to follow the difference.

Tobacco tea recipe:

10g loose tobacco (I like good quality organically grown 'baccy such as American Spirit or Bali Shag)
1 liter very hot water
Few drops liquid soap

Let the tobacco steep in the water for about an hour, you want a tan-colored liquid. Strain, add liquid soap, and apply.

Tobacco tea and Spinosad work by completely different means--nicotine is the toxin (neuro if I recall) in the tobacco and Spinosad uses bacilli to make the bugs sick.

Thanks for the recipe Seamaiden, have you tried this if so how did you get on....Positive outcome? My recipe was the same pretty much used less baccy and less water tho but im not finding any change in the thrips. Maybe takes awhile?

Spinosad will knock out thrips all by its lonesome- at least in my garden. I've had them twice over the years, and never found anything to knock 'em out like spinosad. Mad props to True Grit for turning me on to the stuff. My first infestation lasted for about 4 months- I tried all sorts of organic controllers, but none of them eradicated the nasty little buggers. One app of spinosad and I haven't seen a thrip since, or any of their damage.
I'd be very careful about using tobacco products around your plants, as tobacco mosaic virus is spread through the air, as well as if you put the stuff directly on your plants. Old school organic gardeners won't allow smoking or chewing anywhere near their garden due to this very fact.

I used it for different critters, and it worked OK, but not great. The only time I've had to "battle" thrips was on one of my rhododendrons, and I just hosed 'em off.

You can up that recipe, doubled easily (20g tobacco instead of 10g).

Ok so, Ive still been spraying one of the plants with the tobacco mix every day still no change in health from tobacco but still got the thrips. The other plant I sprayed with Yates success active ingrediant Spinosad thrips no more within a day!! So in conclusion I think this is definitly they way to go as there are prob too many verriables with the tobacco ( Blend, strength of mix, types of thrips that are effected by it etc...) And as our main concern is the health of our girls a fast result is better as then they can continue growing without the stress of pests/diseases. Just my feelings on it. This is not to say this wouldnt work just the time it may take for it to was somthing I wasnt prepared to do.

Throw out all your plants.

Totally clean your room.

Start over with clean clones.

Thrips are not normally an indoor pest, but once established I have never got rid of them if I kept ANY infected plants.

Anything with Spinosad in it... one spray and mine were gone! Im unsure of what brands there are over there but I used Yates Success here in NZ and I fully rate it!

farmers used to spray tomatoes with tobacco and now a lot of tomato varieties get Tobacco Mosaic Virus. before they started spraying, TMV didn't even exist. i'm sure it works, just saying there might be future problems that arise. i know Chemdog d has a TMV problem and i would hate to see it pop up in other varieties.

I tried the tobacco route and, while it did not harm my plants, it did not kill thrip larvae.

I watched some under a scope writhe and contort as if they were going down in a horrible way. Then they shit out a gut full of mucus and just crawled away.

Anyhow, Spinosad (spinocyn A & D) is the answer. It's a metabolic byproduct of a bacteria. It's a neurotoxin to inescts that basically revs them past redline and they die. Haha haha.

Tobacco harbors viruses that are harmful to cannabis. I have cultivated both crops and always keep the cannabis upwind from the tabacco. I would not use tabacco.

used spinosad, A few applications and that did the trick. I appreciate the advice. Didin't need to trash my plants as someone responded to this thread suggested. cleaned grow room with spinosad and no problems have resurfaced. Thanks again for the help.

Ha! It's soooo easy for someone else, someone that doesn't have the time invested, to call for disposal of your garden.

Glad you've got it handled! Try to give some room between plants, keep the dead foliage picked out of the canopy and allow some fresh air exchange into your room.
