Here's our recipe. I don't know if we can post a PDF document, so I pasted it in from a MS Word document. It looks like it's okay. Let me know if you have any questions.
A Two-Infusion Tincture Recipe
Equipment and Supplies
- 6 ounces of 190 proof Everclear.
- A scale that measures grams for weighing buds.
- A measuring cup for the alcohol.
- 3 - 8- or 16-ounce jars with ring-type canning lids.
- Cheesecloth.
- Paper coffee filter.
- A 200-milliliter beaker. (Recommended)
- A small crockpot. (Recommended)
- A culinary temperature probe (like this). (Recommended)
Decarboxylation
- Grind enough bud to weigh 8 grams after decarboxylation.
- Decarboxylate it at 240º for 20 to 30 minutes.
First Infusion
- Mix the decarboxylated bud with 3 ounces of Everclear in a jar.
- Shake it very well for at least 5 minutes. (16-ounce jars mix better.)
- Freeze it for a few days, occasionally shaking it.
- Strain it through cheese cloth into a second jar.
- Tightly seal and freeze the second jar.
Second Infusion
- Mix 3 ounces of Everclear with the previously washed bud in the first jar.
- Shake it well and freeze it for a few days, occasionally shaking it.
- Strain it through a cheese cloth into the second jar that contains the strained first wash.
Fine Strain the Infusion
- There should be about 6 ounces of the cheesecloth-strained mixture in the second jar. (There might be some loss while in the freezer.)
- Strain it through a coffee filter. Push a coffee filter an inch or two into the third jar and hold it in place with a lid ring or rubber band.
- Straining through the coffee filter can take an hour or two, so find an out-of-the-way place to do it.
Reduce the Infusion
- Pour the finely strained infusion into a heat-proof container. Use of a 200-milliliter beaker is recommended.
- Use a small crockpot with water up to the level of mixture in the beaker.
- Reduce it down to 2 fluid ounces (60 milliliters).
- Use the temperature probe to set the temperature below the boiling point of alcohol (173º F), or about 160º F. It takes several hours to get to 2 ounces, and it evaporates more rapidly as it gets close, so check it often.
- The more the tincture is reduced, the more potent it becomes.
Enjoy Your Tincture
- Store the tincture in a refrigerator.
- 2-ounce dropper bottles work well. These are available on Amazon.
Notes
- Some say longer wash times are better, but we haven't been able to verify it. We've found that even a few hours provide good results. We had some in a wash for several months, and it wasn't noticeably better than a short wash.
- We use 190 proof Everclear. Others use lower proof or different types of alcohol. We haven't tried the others. I'm pretty sure the higher the proof the better the tincture. So, maybe longer wash times would be better when using lower proof alcohol.
