I'm currently growing from seed, plants are in 1 gal pots and they are in week 3 of veg. I was planning on topping towards the end of week 4 then flipping after a week of recovery. Is it a good idea to transplant into 3 gallon pots at the end of week 4, wait 2-3 days, then top, then after a week switch to 12/12? Or should I top at the end of week 4 in the 1 gallon pots, then transplant after a week? Or should I just top at the end of week 3 if I have 4 good nodes?

i would transplant wait a week let them get established then top
wait another week and flip
i normally wait till 6 nodes before top guess you can
do it before

Thanks! I've heard 3 to 6, maybe I'll wait for 5 to be safe.

Any change like topping, replanting etc causes stress to the plant. The less stress, the easier to recover. Never initiate anything that will stress the plant multi-fold unnecessarily.

I just experimented with this question topped 2 prior to transplant and the other two after transplant as of right now it looks like the two that I topped prior are doing better bigger all around healthier as of 10 days after transplant!
