If or when I top my plant. Can I keep the top and turn it into a clone? I have some cloning gel. If I were to try and keep it what should I do to keep said top viable?

I am new to growing, but I did just that recently, topped a plant three times and cloned the cuttings. Put the first one in rockwool, the second in water and the third straight to coco, all three under a humidity dome for almost two weeks, and they all rooted eventually.

I suggest reading up on cloning just a little. As MD stated they used three different ways of getting the cuttings to root which I have done one and am working on a second style not mentioned above (using a humidifier in the root zone. It’s an experiment lol).

But yeah man you can top plants and get clones. Literally just did it this morning : ) dont mind the scraggly looking cutting not looking happy hahahah! The nice cutting is the top off my Grandads lavender.

Also pictured are two plants I topped and placed the cuttings into the tote cloner! : )

Yes it clones just like any other cut. Cut it at the node at 45 degree angle put in cloning gel then into what ever substrate you want: rock wool jiffy’s or rapid roots.

it's how i do it and here's a photo of my clone setup. I like to have them under a humidity dome for about a week. I remove it for about a hr. a day to check them. I don't keep the soil overly wet just damp and let the humidity do the rest. I spray the inside of the top of container and snap it onto the bottom. It's just a store bought cake container i saved nothing fancy. Some folks don't use domes on their clones but it's a habit i've had for years.
