You can it’s called bottom feeding, they have complete setups for this like aqua pots. I have not done it so I can’t say weather it works well or not. I know a few guys in soil with bottom feed setups and they love them cause they are easy. I believe you have to top feed until a certain point as well.

thanks just as i put the water in my tray and it was soaked up fast but i don’t no if it’s better to do that or not as my a problem but thanks for the reply

It will work if done correctly but the least desirable method in my opinion .

You just have to top feed once to get the soil saturated when you switch to bottom feeding.

Soaking your pot directly isn’t advisable unless you know what you’re doing. Using water wicks if you’re growing in soil is the better option IMO.

I like to bottom water. It assures me that the media is completely saturated versus top watering. Also keeps salt from building up in the soil bottom if I'm using salt based ferts.

The first indoor grow I did was using a flood and drain style irrigation. This is literally a bottom watering system and probably one of the most used types of systems for beginners. Probably why I like to bottom water of course I was using 6" rockwool cubes as my media too so flood and drain is perfect for that type of media. I like growing in soil so flood and drain would be a mess for me so top watering it is.

I grow in 5 gallon pots so I water in increments. First to wet the top soil and let it percolate down then follow with more increments until I see around 10% runoff.

The only problem with bottom watering is the oxygen can get cut off from roots from bottom watering. The only time one should bottom water a large container is when their substrate has become hydrophobic and needs to be re-hydrated. You can get by with it for a while but in large containers, it can come back and bite you on the behind. Good luck.

Depends on plant size and what phase it’s in - water till runoff , pick up the pot feel the weight ? - now wait 3 days pick it up again does it feel feather lite ? Then water again , if not wait another day .
All that being said a good starting point would be would around 1 gallon of water every 3/4 days

Sub-irrigation works well with organics when you don't want/need a drain to waste. But since no water-solubilized salts ever leave the medium that can pose the danger of salt-buildup.

Having great success with sub irritated pots, look uo on YouTube. Growing trees and only water occasionally from top using Mega crop and in res. Most if you do not fully understand how it works or have never attempted. I love the style Growing in dirt and getting hydroponics results. Also no need to PH !!!

My last three indoor runs were bottom watering. It worked so well when ac infinity self-watering bases came out I had to get them because it made sense. I noticed in flower that they weren't keeping up so I added wick. Now they are keeping up nicely I still top water in ferments and labs to break down the topdressing's.

Sorry but this is false. Fabric pots exist for a reason :) these are those absolutes that I'm talking about..

I do both. About 60-70% of my water goes into the bottom tray to be wicked up, the rest gets poured in the top.
