First off I've found myself looking around at different sites through the years just from the general interest from toking, reading many High Times & my fascination with cannabis altogether. With reading more & more I feel I have a broader understanding of the plant than others who I smoke with, however, I know that I'm definitely a newb here & to the world of growing. Knowing & actually growing quality can be totally different spectrums on their own. I've always wanted to be able to smoke something knowing I grew it so that's why I've come here.
Lately I've been contemplating or semi-starting gathering & constructing materials for an aeroponic hydro grow from an article seen in High Times, June '09 & a recent grow guide edition, where PVC pipe & fiberglass fencepost are used. It shows how to create a cloner, veg, & flowering stage in a perpetual harvest fashion. Using a grow tent in this case. Realizing that this would be my 1st actual grow, the idea of attempting auto strains first would possibly be easier with helping get the basics down before fully jumping in the water, I could be wrong???
Anyone ever tried to replicate this specifically? Should I go in a different direction due to being a beginner? Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes ,

No autos, start out with real weed if your indoor and in control of your environment. Tailor the plants to how you want not flower when they want.

And no to aero, if this is your first grow, stick to soil, you won't have drastic swings in the point of a couple hours. Soil is wayyy more forgiving to a beginner and mistakes than anything else.

Don't listen to high times. They get paid to talk. Take everything as an idea or w a grain of salt

Welcome Chillaxin. I'm in full agreement with Classic on where to start--I always advise new growers to start with soil for its forgiveness. Just don't overlove (read overfeed/overwater) the plants.

I can assure you that, yes, your perspective will change greatly once you move from consumer to producer. It can be like living a dream. Or a nightmare (depending on what's going on!). ;)

You just got the best advice from two excellent farmers. There are many here who will help 'coach' you through your first grow. Good luck!

after the previous posts I have nothing to add. A good soil maybe some ammendments and learn to read your babies. From there you can break off into other styles. Also this and one other site (invite only) are the only place to learn, dont put up with bs sites, nothing but frustration and misinformation :D

Thanks for the advice, going with soil initially & learning from trial & error was always the smart option, but the idea of hydro was tempting. Guess I'll be reading/researching from the soil perspective & ask for suggestions & feedback along the way. Any suggestions on strains in specific that would be a good starter to learn from?

So no to Auto's altogether? Was thinking of putting a few of those outdoors due to the short cycle, timing, etc. Seems like I've always heard good things with Iranian auto from the joint doctor. It does well indoor & out, can veg longer for size, & its short cycle. Genuine or exaggeration?

and Hey if you wanna play with hydro, do a bubble bucket with a 6" net pot, run veg&bloom so you dont worry about ph, or very few do anyway and give it ago while running soil, that how I got into hydro. Then as you learn, you can try differnt styles.......lord knows i did :D Good Luck

I must agree with the seamaiden and classicremix on This 1also bro. D. I. Y AERO? ?..NO WAY MATE, You have to use soil if ya want a crop man. There is waayyy to MUCH 2go wrong. And you REALLY HAVE TO BE IN THE BALL .Im not doubting you bro, but give soil a go 1st man. And AUTOS BELEIVE IT OR NOT, ARE ACTUALLY MORE DIFFICULT TO GROW I. M. H. O. MANY WILL AGREE AND SOME WONT. BUT GREAT LUCK MAN. HOPE WHATEVER YOU PICK. YOU GET THE BEST OUT MATE :-).GOOD LOOK BROTHER.

Stay away from ALL auto's and ALL fems IMO total waste of time and energy on the inferior..

Hydro is way easier for me than soil, I learned in hydro ebb & flow tables and DWC's setups...IMO way more forgiving than soil and you get better yields and cycle times, set it and forget it more or less...soil loads up with nutes, messy, heavy, requires way more of a flushing process, and if there is a problem it takes a week to fix it not overnight like hydro...growing soil indoors is a major pain in the ass for me anymore

i agree with tk, hydro is simple. much easier to see a reaction to what you've added to your nutes, i grow in soil also but its pretty hard to fuck up a rdwc system as long as you buy a good meter ( bluelab guardian ) been using the same one for 3 years now. just calibrate once a month. and a chiller, gotta have a chiller. and keep it simple don't waste your money on magic sauces. they will just ruin shit.

i would have a hard time RECOMMENDING any 1site hydro system, the more water in the system the better. if your going to just do a single plant id do like urbanfrog said, just a 5 gallon bucket with an air stone and net pot. just remember to keep it simple, there's alot of factors that have to be DIALED before you would do any good with bloom boosters and crap like that. a simple a&b nute is your best bet. I've always had good luck with aqua flakes but that's not to say another nute won't work.

Get yourself a single unit waterfarm complete, I think they are under $50 bucks with everything you need, they work great IMO....you can build a DWC tub with (2) 8" netpots in it and an air pump for about $30 bucks and that works killer as well....I veg for my UC buckets in DWC's these days and it works great with a single airstone
