What region do you grow in?

I'm curious to know how you grow outdoors across all states and Canada. Is growing outdoors different from the east coast to the west? What kind of weather, pest, soil, laws, and just the general different styles. Do you grow a bunch of autos or do you grow trees? What's the best strains to grow for your region? How long are your seasons?

I started growing in the south east roughly 17 years ago. I'm now in New England. I started with bag seed and majority of the seeds came from Mexican brick weed. Once cannabis became legal to grow I was able to start selecting the strains. I've grown too many to count. Most of my experience is gorilla grow in hot humid long seasons. Once I came to New England a little over a year ago I was able to openly grow without any reprocussions from the law. Most sativa did great in the south usually from April to November. New England is June to October. So far autos and indica seem to be top choice here. I have sativa hybrids but told they are bred for the climate. Enough indica to be ready for October.

Originally started growing about two decades ago in central New Mexico. High desert, super arid, hot during the summer, spring and fall seeing day/night temp swings of 30+ degrees, plus a lot of wind in the spring and sometimes heavy storms during the summer. Grasshoppers and ants were the primary plant pests I dealt with outside. Otherwise it was a battle against black widows, scorpions, centipedes, and venomous snakes for human pests. sativas, hybrids, and indicas all faired well enough given the arid conditions, growing season could be pretty damn long, up until the first freeze even, typically early december.

now i'm in the SW washington state and we just don't have the season to run sativas effectively. bud rot is the primary issue. i've had to deal with aphids, leaf miners, grasshoppers, PM, etc. the whole gauntlet of typical rainy/humid environments. given where i'm located within the city, i won't run outdoors again. last time i did, you could smell my house half a block away and that was simply too sketchy for me since WA is fucking stupid and wants all that tax revenue to themselves vs letting people grow their own. plus, losing two plants to botrytis wasn't cool. some day i wouldn't mind setting up a hoop house, then i can at least attempt to control the smell a bit better and extend the growing season. the rains in the spring and fall can be pretty bad, so the other thing to consider up here is genetic resilience to botrytis and PM.

I am in the SF bay area.
Climate is pretty good.
I've only grown for a couple years, so I certainly don't know all the ins and outs of the process.
I have had issues with aphids and mites on a couple of my outside plants.
Inside my issues are low tech implementation, but things are looking decent still.

Definitely different all around the states in my opinion. I live in Northeastern Ohio so indicas grow good outdoors here. Usually rainy & harvest times in late September/early October. 60 day flowering strains best here!

I’m in Northern California just past the foothills at 3000 foot elevation. I start seeds in March under t5s then move outside in early May . Harvest by mid October , hopefully after the nights get cold but before the storm fronts come in.

Yeah frost is a big factor here. Have had early frosts where I’ve had to harvest a little early with some plants.

I’m in NE Massachusetts and have grown outside for 15+ years. I start seeds (mostly photo fems indicas) indoors in early April under T5s and put outside in early May. Most in ground plants turn into trees 7-10 ft tall and most potted plants are nice bushes 5-7 ft. Biggest issues are PM and bud rot in fall. No real insect problems. Last summer was very wet. This summer hot and dry. Yikes Mother Nature, make up your mind already!

Hey, Nova Scotia here, I tried growing outdoors here 25 + years ago then off and on through the years but the fall weather sucks for flowering. Some years it could be great if we new ahead of time but most years cold, damp,foggy weather for days on end just isn't good for buds to mature in. In doors though,,,,ah fk it still sucks 95f 100% humidity summer or -15C & 15% humidity winter and just ugly bad the rest of the year......lol

Ontario canada can really suck. Gets so humid. Lost all my plants last year to PM and no matter what I did I couldn't get rid of it ...This year so far so good other than aphids but I also have a race againt time. They all have to be done by october, cause it gets cold usually and 2 plants just started August 1st and have had nights of 8C. Meh at least Ill for sure have one done in September!! Lol

It's almost impossible here in Phoenix, Arizona. We get months of 110°F here some years. Everything burns. The pots get hot ect. I'm in two 2x4 tents and a small bedroom seems to be the only way you would think but a buddy of mine here grows between two walls outside. 2x10 breeze way.
I mix my own soil. 30% Mushroom compost, 35%pearlite and 30% spagham peat moss. I also add a lot of diatomaceous earth for those pesty fungi Flys. Love growing in 5 gal. Grow bags. Fox Farm trio and ph down tap is about pH7 here so ph down is a must. Live to grow.

Windsor ontario canada here.
I never grow out doors.
Summer is to hot and humidity and winter is to cold.
Lots of people grow out doors in windsor but it's a total crap shoot.

Hi there fellow Phoenician. I just popped some beans for the fall season. I'm hopeful that by the end of next month we should be out of the 100+ degree days. Bought some autos to pop outside later this fall too.
I agree about the pots getting too hot. Ive wondered if you had the pot sitting in a larger white planter, so that there was atleast some air circulation to move the heat. Maybe that could help?

Ya I painted them white, about 2.5 gallon pots. It was a fail. I've been using 5 gallon bags since then. I might try it like you say. Also it was too hot, the wrong season and I had way less experience then. I've graduated from collage at the age of 60. Horticulture was my major. Your making me think about making seeds out there this year. Buy the way I'm from Wickenburg but a lot of people aren’t sure where that is so I said Phoenix.
Love Phoenix tho. I do most of my shopping there.
