Why do you want to top the plant in the first place?

You can top a plant whenever you want. They take about a week to recover.

Something about a main cola the size of a baseball bat and bigger.
Some strains do better topping to get more bud and some grow giant colas.

I'm a topping nut, I top and keep topping until about 1 week before I flip them. This Sweet Tooth has been topped over 60 times Started from seed March 1st its 20 " tall in the pic. I took these 40 a couple weeks ago

Train it, with a net or with wire. It gives the same effect, faster, safer and easier.

A plant takes about a week to recover from topping. It doesnt need recovery time from regular training.

Top a branch and it gives you 2 tops. Bend that branch under a net, or wire it down and it gives you 2 to 6 tops depending on how long the branch is and how many nodes it has. In less time than topping cause it doesnt need to heal from you cutting it.

I only have 5 ft under my 1000w light and I need to keep them short. This Sweet Tooth has grown at a perfect pace to top so many times. Some grow too quick and I don't get a chance to top as often. That plant is 2 months old today and I don't have room in my flower room to put her in for another 2-3 weeks.

It may grow a bit slower when I top so often but I like bushes not trees.

Netting is just to restrictive for me, it may work in a tent because of the limitation in a tent for space but if I don't overcrowd my flower room I can spread them out and tie them down.

I haven't timed recovery from topping, I don't really see any slow down at all. If I top today the lower 2 shoots will be standing up and ready to go the next day. Some if the lower shoots are big enough they seem to turn into viable stocks in a day or 2. a week -10 more before I can top the now 2 shoots where there was 1.
