So just starting conversation here but at the same time curious, how did yall learn? Did you all have gardens and stuff before pot? I’ve never grown anything in my life but I love the science behind it and I actually can’t wait to do my first grow when I’m ready.

I’m just getting started and bought the book “The Cannabis Grow Bible” by Greg Green
What did ya’ll use? As an academic and also as a nerd I like to read and watch everything I can about a subject, especially one I’m passionate about =)

Kinda learned as I went. Yes always had gardens. Really pushed twords permaculture out there and saw awesome results and continued improving, over time I completely changed my methodology on how I grew weed too, ditched the synthetics and moved to organic, and eventually to where I am now with all living soil indoors and out in the veggie garden

I say there’s no wrong way per se, only better ways, and I’m not meaning synthetic vs organic etc I mean more along the lines of there’s always room for improvement no matter the method, dont get stuck in your ways, I was nervous and converted slowly. One plant at first, then 2 then everything. But I spent 3-4 full runs doing that before I committed to full living soil.

I read the grow Bible for the first time 20-25 years ago I have the Jorge Cervantes grow Bible but, a lot of their methods are old and outdated but do great to get going, learn about methods etc (stays right in the smoke cabinet)

I actually picked up “one straw revolution” last night and “the living soil handbook” last night should have em Thursday I’ve heard really good stuff about the first one, the 2nd I picked up on a whim but looks like a good, informational book

But most of my ideas and adjustments have came from the veggie garden seeing what works and what dosent, especially with the tomatoes and peppers.

I just like growin shit

Ok I’ve trashed your topic enough

Like Mikedin grew everything. Nothing better than eating from your own garden. Weed came second, soon as legalized , full speed ahead.

There are some great online resources for various grow styles. For organic, Build-a-Soil and Mr. Canucks have a ton of great information on YouTube. For amended soil and synthetic nutes, Welcome to the Growtent's channel and community are excellent. For autoflowers, Bill Ward is the man. For coco coir, Dr. MJ Coco at his website "Coco for Cannabis" has a lot of fantastic articles.

Definitely not trashing the topic, that was a great response, and I’ve got two new books to read now that’s literally the whole reason for the post =)

I definitely appreciate the pictures, I’m hoping to be a strong grower like that too one day =)

I’ve always grown something (not well). LOOONG time ago I knew a guy who did some gorilla grows where he shouldn’t have! ; ) pretty sure he learned a lot in those endeavors. Then he went and worked on a farm and had some fun and realized hes here for him and not some prick who whores one out to more “farmers” for work tons of lessons to learn in the ganja world other than just growing herb : )

I’ve read a ton here! lots of help from really smart folks here also! im still learning a ton but have become more comfy with growing the plant and knowing why im doing certain things. im the type of person who can be told the whole damn thing on one single page and still not understand it until i do it for myself, with that said its been a loooong road even to get this point! and I havent even been doing it long enough to call it a “loooong road” LOL!

i think youll do fine picking it up! youre here already asking questions and thats a huge first part of it! naturally curious! if you make a grow journal you can document things for you and others to help if need be or you want.

you’re going to mess things up. you’re going to feel some heart ache over this : ) but that’s part of the learning also! its just a weed and can grow in a ditch! HAHAHAHA! it sure can! but man you can really get the fine point sharpies out for detail beyond the eyes perception! the whole thing is biology! science abound! once you get all the (i killed my seedlings out of the way) youll really start to be able to focus on the “sciences” and that shit is beyond cool, putting everything together and knowing why you did it!

(maybe your a science major and already know the biology) thats awesome! now youll be able to apple things in a different way to help you succeed! i look at it as just coming at it from a different angle! : )

have fun with it. dont loose that aspect

Horticulture class in HS back around 1994 or 93. Learned in a greenhouse growing flowers. It's a plant like others.

Like most older growers i learned from mentors who grew under the radar and i practiced the craft trial and error. Now it's been over 40yrs of outdoor growing and i've toned it way down. LOL

this post totally flashed me back to the SWIM era of online forums hahahahaha.

if ya know you know, if not, google it

i learned the way you go at a new video game. By fucking up until i didnt. Mr Jorge Cervantes and forum trawling grasscity and RIU on 56k dial up, pretending to be an adult as a teenager hiding his plants from his mom.

Side note lmao, really the only thing i still maintain to this day that i learned from Mr Cervantes, was that goat shit is great shit. I still use the hell out of goat shit on every outdoor grow i can. Its wonderful stuff, and if you do the same spot next year, itll be even better by then. You can throw it down fresh too. just put some more down once a month, and by this time next year you wont actually have to do anything else besides put just a little more down each month through the growing season. (Its almost like that was how cannabis co-evolved with us in the middle eastern mountains or something LOL)

Honestly, i probably pulled off "being an adult" on the internet better back then, then i do now. Talking instantly with people in different parts of the world still felt like this cool, special thing back then.

Someone who isn't me used to use the word SWIM on the internet all the time because he thought it somehow removed some amount of risk. Not nearly as many people were on the internet back then, and it was a lot easier for law enforcement to get your IP and address quickly and prove the data originated from you beyond a shadow of any doubt.. And you had to setup your own VPN manually and cycle your own IP address manually. yo couldn't just give tunnel bear money to do it for ya lmao.

SWIM got around into all sorts of shit though, he was like the old internet's Florida man.

I just jumped in. Friend turn me on to Jorge Cervantes. Read a few of his books. Watched a million videos that were completely wrong. Lots of trial and error. Some solid advice from a few people. Then the world change when I was turned onto the build a soil way.
