You probably had fairfax four way? The cultivar that was too loud for prohibition.I can only go by my experiences, I was a 1970’s Humboldt grower, I remember when skunk was developed in the early-mid 70’s about the same time as sinsemilla and Indica, it was an Indica/sativa cross. It took over immediately, guys were getting 5k/lb (in the 70’s) for top shelf skunk. I have searched and probably bought 6-7 different current strains that claim to be “skunk”, well they are all weak sauce at best. Nothing like the old school skunk. The old skunk was so potent you could smell it in a car in the driveway, when cruising the back roads in fall, you could smell it for miles! I’ve made several trips to my old stomping grounds, and contacted all my old contacts (that are still alive)l, hit up every dispensary in the county (and there’s a LOT of them), and I can sadly say “The skunk is dead!” I can also say that back then there were few recognized strains, skunk was skunk, when people say it was a cross of this strain and that strain, that’s not correct, because those strains didn’t exist in the 70’s. In fact those later crosses were the death knell of skunk, they might of gotten higher THC levels (though at the time skunk THC levels were among the highest), but they bred out the terpenes for skunk!
Matthys and Hemphill had countless stories to share about the powerful funk of the Four-Way. “It was on some other superhuman level of stink, that shit was the loudest weed ever,” said Matthys. Hemphill added to Matthys’ account of the otherworldly funk, telling a story about a friend who bought an 8th of Four-Way, and when he got home his parents called animal control because they thought there was a skunk in the house. “It really amplified the skunk,” said Hemphill, “I went to a reggae show in DC and someone was talking to everyone about a skunk and I only had three grams in my pocket."

i had 2 plants growing in my basement in 1989/90? and i’d go outside to the sidewalk about 25 yds away or so and could smell it easily and the doors were closed and no windows were open downstairs or upstairs, it was one sativa about 12ft or so and an indica about 5ft, drove me nuts as i lived about 300-400 yds from a police dept and i was up to other things as well and because of that the growing indoors stopped after,. that weed sold out in a day,., lots of strains back than were stinky as fuck, i remember an outdoor grow and at harvest time we went at night and over 100 yds away we could smell it clear as day that had to of been mid 80’s,.. i had one buddy who used to grow indoors all the time and for a yr or so he did nothing but trying to hide the smell, ended up he moved to a remote area just so he could grow and not be paranoid about the smell,.. yes i know the skunk and all the others, i had friends grow all that, i used to get them seeds from amsterdam in the later 80’s, cant remember what they were though weren’t many strains, he does say still to this day that one of them he loved and wish he could get it again,.. and ya i bought the seeds at sensi seeds between 1985-1990, i went more than once haha,..

And would wear off in blotches. I think I still have one. We used it for tomato seedlings.my first grow light (that I used once) was basically a 150 watt floodlight with a bluish coating inside the bulb,

Yeah, after a while the heat would curl the paint/coating and it would fall off. By the end of the grow it was basically just a floodlight.And would wear off in blotches. I think I still have one. We used it for tomato seedlings.

I have been searching for the old skunk that I smoked in the 90's that smelled like an actual skunk it was so good but I can't find it anywhere I have grown super skunk and other skunk strains but so far not even close to that old skunk strain. I just got a cut of #1 skunk and I'm hopeful this is it but I doubt it. has anybody found the real skunk strain that stinks so good?

What is Skunk Cannabis?
Of all the varieties that I have grown, "Skunk" has to be the most requested and also the least understood. Many people think it is a variety, when in reality, it is more of a description of one of the many distinctive scents of cannabis found in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Hindu Kush mountains.

Skunk doesn't grow well with regular fertilizers, which is why it smells. It's all a myth. Either tell me about the plant's biology or keep quiet. That's what I think. Just because something is written doesn't mean it's true.

No such 'skunk' strain.......original smelly 'skunk' was a combo of 2 or 3 landrace strains.....created the 'skunk' smell and flavour
Who knows when and how many people crossed those with whatever and created which of the commercialized 'skunk' strains.
