Hope they pop for you man, I know there are methods for popping older seeds,.. might want to look into it before you try cuz you only get one shot!

That old skunk strain was one of the first “kind buds” we smoked around my part of town back in early 90’s…straight skunk…the reason myself and many others salivate when we smell actual skunk roadkill .

First seeds I ever bought back in late 90s were skunk #1 from sensi seedbank…a friend sent them from Amsterdam while on vacation…long story short…good weed, not even a hint of skunk. I’m still disappointed almost 30 years later .

I took a shot. I have one of those flowering outside right now. It smells pretty strong so far. I mixed a bunch of elemental sulfer in with the soil before planting. I read somewhere on here that it helps with the skunk smell. Pistils are white with pink tips. Most of the fan leaves are turning yellow. Buds are plumping up good. Southern Ohio.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to add my perspective. I grew up in the ’70s and ’80s, and I can say without question that the Skunk available back then simply doesn’t exist on the market today. On our farm, we’ve grown nearly every modern Skunk variety—including Skunk #1—and none of them come close to the old-school Skunk. It often feels like the name “Skunk” is being used as more of a marketing label than a true reflection of the genetics. It’s widely acknowledged in the industry that the original Skunk was so pungent and unmistakable that breeding was eventually discontinued, largely because of how illegal and risky it was at the time. As newer strains took over, the original genetics were gradually lost.

To bring it back, breeders would likely need to start from scratch and work together to attempt to recreate that legendary classic.

When I lived in Ocean Beach, circa 84', that shit was so pungent. Never heard of it until then.

Truth is, as a professional perfumer I can tell you the olefactory context has a rapid shift even on a collective level when it comes to things like "classic" smells. Road kill skunk was a pheno and was a term given to many bags back in the day if it was loud and stinky like a skunk. It is what people associated to the smell when they had nothing else to compare it too, and there wasnt much other loud herb on the market. I am confident to say that today there is plenty of herb that would match the description as "road kill skunk" in the 90s if transported back to that time and how people thought and associated smells. but now days most people's noses don't associate such a smell to skunk because they have way more associations. You put GMO in the 90s, people would call it skunk. Black domina was skunk. So to find the actual Road Kill Skunk pheno, would be a very difficult thing to find nowadays, because there is no real way to lock down what people were really smelling in the 90s. And the whole idea it was discontinued to grow because of legality and smell; Sorry just if that was the cases, the Chem line, diesels ect would have been canceled also because they were not an easy smell to hide. A very elusive pheno and topic discussion.

I can tell you that what I was smelling in the 90s was virtually indistinguishable from what skunk spray or skunk roadkill smells like….it wasn’t skunk and fruit or gas and skunk…it was straight skunk…I’ve smoked and grown plenty of skunky strains, but again, that pure skunk smell I, like others haven’t experienced since.

Old school skunk growers hung their bud for a couple weeks didn't use boveda or worry about it getting too dry.

That really dry weed hit good, is that not a factor too?

The skunk I remember from the 70s and early 80s—we just called it Indica.

You could have it triple zip-locked, stuffed down your pants, and the moment you walked into a bar, every head would turn. That smell hit people before you even made it through the door.

When the Allegheny County hillbillies got hold of it, they grew the hell out of it, and before long, folks were calling it Allegheny Indica. Sticky? Man, it was so sticky you couldn’t handle it without gluing your fingers together. One hit and you were flying. Two hits, and you were higher than you wanted to be. Three hits, and you’d better find yourself a soft place to land. The stuff expanded so hard in your lungs that anything bigger than a baby hit would blow them out. No exaggeration.

The leaves were fat, dark green, and the smell was so skunky it barely even looked—or smelled—like what people thought “marijuana” was supposed to be. The calyces—yeah, that’s a real word—were massive. So were the seeds, tiger-striped beauties we called “watermelon seeds.” The plants rarely broke 3 or 4 feet tall, but outdoors they’d still crank out a pound or two apiece without breaking a sweat.

Early on, folks grew it right out in the open because nobody knew what it was. Some even beat their cases in court because the laws only mentioned Cannabis Sativa. Took the state a while to catch up and outlaw Indica too.

Me? I haven’t seen anything like it since the early 90s.

The original landrace strains it came from have been bred, crossed, and watered down so badly now…I highly doubt it’ll ever be revived, unless some lucky fool finds some heritage 80's seeds and gets them to crack. my .02

Funny you say that , so true , My LSD ... Was like that ... Was the last plant I had to get to so she hung for a while .... And my storage skills at that point was ... Lazy , Made her smell the best and skunky for a really long time . Found an old tray of buds I left laying out ... Dry as hell but was still really stinky, I left the leaves on her forever . Until I could get to trimming her . Was like 3 weeks or more . Went to the trim when you want to smoke it method with that one .
