Exchange Info n Tips on 400V lighting

Discussion in 'Tree Farming' started by ttystikk, Sep 25, 2013.

  1. This forum's purpose is to create an exchange point for all things related to 400V HID lighting. Any info, any specs, any brand, any configuration, any wattage, any grows run with them, post it and link it here! Keep it clean and respectful, off topic stuff to a minimum, please!

  2. I'm sure there will be a lively debate on the relative merits of the Gavita DE vs the ePapillon unit, for one.

I'm interested in the single ended bulbs that still run 400V, both 600W and 1000W sizes. If I understand what I've seen correctly, they run in standard mogul sockets, making them compatible with a wide range of fixtures, as well as bare bulb vertical arrangements? I'd inquired about hanging a DE vertically and told that wasn't a good idea, but hanging a mogul based bulb with the same innards is close enough in my book. Anyone else interested in running vertical bulb grows with these?

    You cant hang DE vert.
the 600 can be hung vert. I am not sure it uses the same socket though. It's an e39.
The gavita and phillips are the same, only thing different is the reflector. Gavita uses phillips bulb.

I will be running 600w 400v GP lights in my new room. Vert.

  4. So am I right in that Philips' Proline Greenpower bulbs are 400V? If so, they're available in both 600 & 1000 watts, mogul sockets single ended, for use with 400V output electronic ballasts. The ballast and the bulb go as a pair, the fixture can be whatever- that's a guess- where would I find out more?

I'm liking the idea of hanging a 1kW 400V bulb in a vertical bare setup.

do you have 3 phase power?

If not you need the conversion ballasts. I am not sure they are sold as a pair? Where did you see this?

  7. Interesting thread,id love to see more on epap vs. gavita also.I am pretty sure that SE and DE bulbs do not share the same innards or work exactly alike even though both may be 400v bulbs, hopefully whazzup will find his way here and give us gavitas take on it.Finding info on Epaps is pretty hard besides that you can get them but no real world stuff or manufacturer feedback that i can find, looks like a gavita knockoff(no disrespect intended but they were first) with a different reflector design?
    Anyways SUBBED.

  8. The ballasts run on normal 240V power, it's their output to the bulb that is 400V.

I will keep looking, I think it was on a Philips website.

  9. It's looking like 400V technology is currently available only in double ended for 1kW bulbs, and only in mogul socket for 600W bulbs. I would like to know if mogul socket thouies exist for 400V systems.

Do you have 3 phase power?

    Single ended: 600
    DE: 1000

I've been looking in to this for a long time. There is a very good thread on another site that is long and detailed.

The e-paps are better IMHO. Philips is a REAL lighting company. They supply gavita. Gavita uses a philips bulb. Philips is making a move to enter the indoor gardening scene and they are going to give everyone a run for their money. Superior technology.

Their reflector is super sick. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is not open on all sides, only on 3 sides. I wish they had designed it with the ballast coming off the top of the reflector and not one side of it.

Hammerhead should get in here I know he is currently doing a side by side with the both.

  11. you guys could always run phase converters if not having 3 phase service is limiting your options.

  12. The electronic ballast used runs the bulbs at 400V, while pulling 240V from household current. Since it's electronic, the unit does it with over 98% power conversion efficiency... I want to run vertical bare bulb as well. Hmmmm...

There are indeed DE bulbs for the new 400v, 600 watt gavita/philips systems. Grener's carries them.

I don't know if there is a true difference between the DE and SE performance in these new light systems? I was pleasantly susprised to see that the philips greenpower 400v lamps are only $58 for the 600 watt ones. That is a freakin deal! That, and a new miro-aluminium insert each year is under $100 to keep things at top performance.

So yea my question is, what advantage is there to using the double ended lamps over the mogul base? They are both called the same thing, philips greenpower 400v. TTY - the DE lamps are not designed for vertical but you could easily remove the aluminium reflector from a gavita pro SE fixture and hang that vertical. There would be a tiny bit of light blockage from the arm that runs above the lamp and attaches to the reflector but not enough to worry about.

And I gotta say, the new gavita pro systems are amazing. So light, awesome design that is just beautiful in its lines and simplicity. The whole ballast/reflector unit weighs about the same as the Lumatek 100w digital ballast alone. I'm glad gavita set me straight on reflectors as well, I used to think bigger was better but now I know that just diffuses the light, and glass robs you of lumens the plant should be getting.

  14. @fractal If you have some links to pages that show the design and specifications, I'd be much obliged... this is excellent news, because I want to hang a 400V thouie bare and vertical!

I want to see someone remove the reflector from a gavita pro unit and hang it vertical. The white aluminum "backbone" of the reflector shouldn't interrupt the light spread much at all, if it is a problem then finding some way to slowly rotate the unit around the vertical bulb's axis would fix that problem.

One more thing about the new philips/gavita lights is that I wonder what the difference is between the same wattage and voltage bulbs when one is mogul base and one is DE double ended. Same voltage, same everything but different bulb. So is the DE double ended bulb only to make it easier and faster to replace bulbs in greenhouses with hundreds of thousands of them? I mean flipping up the spring arm to remove the reflector, replacing that and then stting in a new DE 600w bulb before snapping back down the reflector retainer clip must be faster than having to screw in a new bulb into the mogul base. Or possibly, it is impossible to damage the DE bulbs because they just lie there and are clamped down at the exposed wires. It is feasible that mogul bases bulbs have cause $$ waste when the bulb is screwed in too tight and breaks the glass, or the bulb will not seat right on the threads and greenhouse worker loses grip and bulb tumbles 20 feet to the floor, smash!

So yeah, anyone know what the diffs are between mogul base and DE bulbs in the new gavita/philips PRO fixtures?

Waiting on a shipment of a bunch of new products for the Cana industry...
