Because the bulbs emit radiant heat which the thermometer reads but that is not the temperature you are interested in. This radiant heat is about 10 degrees F.With the white plastic remote monitor you can hang directly under the lamp over the canopy.
I dont see how checking in the shade shows the max canopy temp?
