Hello all.
I have a dog who is 14 years old and has been going downhill pretty fast.
A friend of mine suggested coconut oil,1 tbsp.,mixed into her food as she's been having some skin problems.(Topically also)
I did some research and decided it would be a good idea.
I bought some organic, extra virgin, non GMO,cold pressed coconut oil(very important)and began to add it to her food.(I like the Nutiva brand)
During my research I also found that it has many benefits for myself as well.
I'm no health nut but I decided it couldn't hurt to give it a go.
It's been a little over a week now and I have to say I am feeling a bit more energetic and clear minded.
I take two tablespoons a day along with 300 mg. of milk thistle and my metamucil capsules that I have been taking for a couple years now.
My dog has a noticeable increase in energy and she just seems to feel generally better.I know it's only a matter of time before the inevitable but anything to give her an edge is a good thing.
These are just 10 of the evidence based benefits from the oil.

Here are some more benefits and I love this woman's site.

Time will tell but so far I'm liking the results.
You may wonder about milk thistle. Here is a bit of info on why I use it.

I wonder how many other people use coconut oil and what are your own thoughts and experiences?

Very good for you..
If you really want to feel better and prevent most illness I highly recommend Nutri Plex Formula's line of whole food raw organic supplements.
Derived from raw ingredients are far superior in all ways
I am a health nut it's pretty simple, avoid what most folks eat, processed packaged crap food.

Refined is much better than unrefined IMO. Unrefined coconut has way to many allergens and is sure to cause issues if eaten in quantities for prolonged periods, if you can even do that before you get sick of the taste.

Check out raypeat.com he has some great articles and is a big advocate of coco oil

Everything I've read says to stay away from refined as it's been chemically treated and possibly hydrogenated. Thanks but I'll stick to the organic.

The major player in the coconut oil is the MCT: medium chain triglycerides. "MCT is oil derived from Coconut oil. It is used by body builders and given to infants who have trouble absorbing nutrients. It gets into your blood stream faster than regular Coconut oil."

Although I'm sure this very Western 'active component' -mode of thinking ignores the synergistic effects of the entire raw coconut, mct's are another place to do some research to expand your understanding of the benefits you're observing.

Here's a good idea of how another med used has combined our favorite plants and the benefits of MCT's/Coconut oil: "Just wanted to share the results of my newest batch of BHO pills. I am trying to get a good dosage down, so I measure everything out. Here is how they were made. First I made some BHO and measured out 2 grams on my scale once it sets up a bit. Next I measured 4ml of MCT oil, for a 2 to 1 ratio of MCT oil to BHO.

Next the MCT oil is put into a mason jar that is sitting in a hot oil bath. The temperature was monitored the whole process, and I brought the MCT oil in the jar up to about 250 F. Now the 2 grams of BHO is put into the jar, stirred often and monitored the temps. I normally like to do 250 F for about 30 min. This time it was done on a different stove, and the temps went up a little higher near the 15 min mark to about 265 F . So I let it cook shorter than normal, about 23 min.

The mixture is left to cool down and I do not mix it with anything. Just load into some 00 capsules. Use a syringe and suck the mixture up, then put into larger side of capsule. They were filled almost to the top, then put other side on. This made 12 capsules that size, and put into freezer in a pill bottle. Next day, I tried one at 2:30 pm. It hit within 30 min and was really good for a couple of hours, then it kicked in WAY harder. I was really screwed up...too screwed up! I was insanely high for 12 hours, at times I could not sit and had anxiety. I made myself go to sleep to make it stop. WAY too strong and I am very seasoned at eating edibles.
So, next batch I am going to use 8 ml of MCT oil to 2 grams of BHO. I plan on making 30 pills and trying one to see how strong they are...then divide as needed.

I want to again stress the importance of Temp vs Time. Please have a good thermometer and monitor the temps the whole time. Making potent edibles is much easier if you keep temps and time in line. "

Have fun - keep that pup comfy dude. Cheers, ftw

No offense but maybe you should do the research yourself. My coconut oil is expeller pressed and organic... Everything you read is wrong. I'm just giving you the heads up from someone that has been using coconut oil heavily for almost 10 years now ;)

Honestly tho so yourself a favor and rad some of the articles I posted. Ray peat isn't some aryuvedic child molester living in his moms basement, he's an actual scientist with a phd in cell biology.

I'm wondering if by refined we're on the same page? This is the oil I'm using. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAT6NG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is my understanding of the two:
Refined Coconut Oil
Refined coconut oil refers to coconut oil that has been bleached, and deodorized. The oil is derived from dried coconut meat known as copra. Traditional Tropics notes that oil obtained from copra has to be purified with bleaching clays because contaminants arise during the drying process. High heat is then used to deodorize the coconut oil to remove its distinctive odor and flavor. Sodium hydroxide is often added to prolong its shelf life. To obtain the most oil, some brands use chemical solvents to extract as much oil as possible from the meat. They may partially hydrogenate the oil, too, which means it will contain trans-fats. MayoClinic.com advises against the consumption of trans-fats, noting they raise bad cholesterol levels while lowering good cholesterol levels.

Unrefined Coconut Oil
Unrefined coconut oil is often referred to as "virgin" or "pure" coconut oil. It is coconut oil extracted from fresh coconut meat rather than dried. The fresh coconut meat undergoes one of two processes: wet milling or quick drying. Quick drying, the most common method used, promptly dries the coconut meat and the oil is mechanically expressed. Wet milling refers to the process in which the coconut milk is expressed from the fresh meat and then boiled, fermented or separated from the milk using enzymes or centrifuge. Due to the quick process, the resulting oil does not require bleaching or additives. It also isn't exposed to high heat levels like its unrefined counterpart. It retains the distinct flavor and odor of coconut.

Gotcha.Hey,if it's working for you then awesome!I chose the cold pressed after a lot of research.I did read Ray's take on it as well though I didn't see where he specified between refined/unrefined.
Personally I love coconut and the taste,It's great in my coffee. The only thing about the brand I chose was concern about BPA in the plastic but it's certified BPA free and the number 1 seller on Amazon and so far very happy with it.I may go with this brand next time as a friend of mine can get it from Costco for $16 for 54oz. Anyway, good health to you my man,I hope to reap some benefits from this coconut oil venture.

My youngest is always telling me about what's in our food.I do buy from the grocery store and I know that shit is packed with hormones, etc. It is hard as hell to get the types of food I/we really need...
I have all but given up going out to eat except a rare time or two throughout the year.I cook every night and try to keep it balanced but I still do get most from the grocery store. With the warm weather coming my garden helps to keep us stocked with fresh veggies, hopefully this year I can jar enough to keep us going till next season.

100% wrong please stop giving out bad info! unrefined raw organic coconut oil is the only way to go.

How am I 100% wrong?

cracked open a jar this morning cuz of this post. used it in my coffee, usually drink it black. I then took a tablespoon shot of it straight. wasnt too bad at all, it left an oily film on my teeth and what not. tasted real good though. It also seemed to sooth my throat.. i sang my ass off in the car on the way to the office ha. i then rubbed some in my palms and applied it to my hair.. my hair feels fucking amazing and smells like almond joy. its been about 8 hours since and my hair is very soft and has no oily type of feeling. (i have long hair that gets pretty crazy) im on board with it, thanks for bringing this back to my attention
