Are you using the IS version of the 100mm macro? I was really impressed with just how well the IS works on that lens. It has made hand holding for macro possible in situations that previously were not.
 
No. I bought this lens a long time ago. Cost me more than the body. Could not afford that at the time as I also bought a ring mount and rail for it.
I just always use the 1/focal length rule and set my ISO accordingly.
I do use the focusing rail when doing close up pics of buds. Makes it much easier. Again, those are some sweet pics in the water drops.
 
WOW! That is why it is also one of my favorites. It does great portrait shots too.
