Fukushima operator TEPCO has been forced to switch off the cooling system at mothballed Reactor Unit 5, after it was discovered that it had been leaking water. In nine days, if the system is not repaired, temperatures will exceed dangerous levels.

Engineers have discovered that 1,300 liters of water leaked from a cooling system intended to stabilize the temperature of the spent fuel at the Reactor Unit 5, which was offline but loaded with fuel rods when the plant was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

The source of the leak was a 3 mm-diameter hole near a flow valve, a statement published by the Japanese energy giant on Sunday asserts. However it is unclear from company data if the location of the opening has been discovered, or whether it was calculated with flow measurements.

At the time when the cooling system was switched off at around 12pm on Sunday, the temperature in the pool in which the rods are submerged was 23C but started increasing by 0.193 degrees per hour, TEPCO says.

If no new cold water is pumped in at such rate it will reach the dangerous threshold of 65C by the midpoint of the month in roughly 9 days.

Such temperatures, which have not been routinely seen at the plant since the failing of the cooling system in the immediate aftermath, would increase the possibility of dangerous reactions and further radiation leaks in the plant.

TEPCO however says that currently, there have been no abnormal readings anywhere in the plant.

Since TEPCO is using seawater for many of its cooling needs at the power plant, it has previously encountered heightened levels of corrosion, in sensitive equipment. The cooling system at various reactors has also been beset by calamities – from rats short circuiting the control panel and forcing a blackout, to an employee “accidentally” switching it off, though all were resolved before rod pools overheated.

At the same time, TEPCO is struggling to deal with ever-increasing volumes of contaminated water which is being stored in hundreds of tanks at the facility and frequently leaking and contaminating the soil beneath it. And the much publicized plan to stop contaminated water from leaking into the sea by building an ‘ice-wall’ and freezing soil and water around the facility is not working as well as Japanese officials had hoped.

Disturbing. Really freaks me out to think shit is still going down there.

One more good sized earthquake and Japan gives us the gift that keeps on giving.

Man!... and now a strong typhoon is heading that way, holy sweet shit!

So if Japan is just gunna turn itself into a toxic wasteland, can we stop feeling bad about those two big bombs we dropped off over there a few years back?

This is not good news with the storm building in the Pacific Ocean. Headed towards Japan. Cali , Or and Wash. Got all the crap floating over along with radiation.

So I'm guessing these nuclear plants can't just shut down? Like they need to keep running or what a melt down.

Now I'm no fucking Genious, but it seems like a really stupid fucking idea to build something that you can't turn off or it will destroy the planet. I can't understand the logic in that. Like why ugm....arnt they just shutting these things down. It's not safe. Like it's not safe on a hole other leval. Not like the flying vs driving argument either. Nuclear fall out.

You'd think the Japanese would be the least likely to build these contraptions.

Isn't syberia or some shit over the like inhabitable becouse of some nuclear disaster?

Those things are every were. All over the planet. I think there is like 4-5 in michigan alone. I know cuz I drove past one on my way to NY ounce and was like that shit looks not cool. So when I got home I googled it.

Idk I'm supprised if this shit is sill going on. Why any one would even still be hanging around in Japan. Doesn't sound like a place to be kicking your feet up.

Like really there are some many of them. Such a bad move.
. Nuclear can be a great energy source but when these were built they knew nothing nor how to get rid of it . We have Hanford in Washington a graveyard for nuclear waste sitting next to the Columbia River they built double walled storage tanks to stop the leaking We have NO. Idea of the truth but it's leaking into ground water . Nuclear stations . Are the size of a outhouse or smaller now Sucks

From what I understand it doesn`t even make energy at a competitive value compared to other electric sources. No good reason to make them anymore. We do need to step up our game in controlling the ones already made and in operation. I`d condense the waste to a solid and incase it in glass pellets that could be launched at the sun. or better yet a black hole.

Japan on highest alert for ‘once in decades’ typhoon — New forecasts show direct hit at Fukushima plant — Official: "Extraordinary situation… Grave danger approaching" — Record-level winds to 170mph, waves near 50ft — Military: "Can’t stress enough how dangerous… not just another typhoon" —
Astronaut: It "takes up our entire view… Wow"...

Was on news yesterday That it was approaching. Not good.

down to 100 mph now i think

Supposed to be down to Tropical Storm Status by the time it hits Fukushima.

Yeah nuclear energy is great... until it turns into an exponential clusterfucking.

Which it essentially always does, because once the fuel is spent, no one wants that shit near them. Ya can't really blame them either!

This is all we need, right here.

Think of the possibilities... focus 100% of the energy of the sun into a single point, aim it at the back of a spacecraft, and ride a fucking concentrated sunbeam into the abyss of interstellar space  Beam me up!

...Okay, on a serious note, the Fukushima situation is actually quite disturbing. And to boot, I'd happened to come into contact with one of my customers that is a retired nuclear engineer. I wish I could remember half of the stuff he talked about when I kind of indirectly asked him about Fukushima, but nonethless, that place is fucked.

I have a friend who is a nuclear engineer. We've had many discussions about the safety and quality of nuclear energy. It's like talking to a wall.He doesn't give an inch when I ask him about waste and rod disposal,he just says we have that all under control and the benefits far outweigh the risks. Our discussions have even become somewhat heated as I've accused him of being a drone and he accuses me of being a liberal hippie. We do still get along but the truth about nuclear waste is relatively unknown to the general public. There's tons of info out there but most of it is propaganda. Here's a fairly good article about nuclear waste. http://www.psr.org/resources/nuclear-power-factsheet.html

Throwing boron, sand, and clay on Fukushima isn’t going to do it. Now its the International Atomic Energy Agency, that we turn to, whose primary mission statement is to have an emergency plan for just this type of problem, Too bad that isn’t one. There are smart People too. Lets hope a few are hard at finding an answer.

Working for a company in Richland Washington after I left the military Was enlightening as well as horrifying, Seems part of the Hanford Clean-up programs were to 1st figure out a long term storage of contaminated liquids, solids and ORGANIC (Animal) lots of critters were tested on up there and were improperly handled, the fear of radioactive airborne particulates curbed the use of incineration.

The documents now unclassified discussed and put into use High power electrical current into the surrounding earth. Its called vitrification and it is a good Idea for that sandy area. The $12.3 billion vitrification plant turns silica base media to Glass and then that Glass is a less harmful method of containment. There is a lot of very bad places still. The list of tank farms and the burial sights were nightmarish to say the least.

I was privy to the final report on Chernobyl’s unit 4 reactor and their Non-YA- solution while at Hanford.

They sent hundreds of untrained unprotected civilians in to remove the debris from the plants main core room, and 400 to dig a tunnel under the Main reactor core basically killing all of the workers who had no clue at the time. Next, well trained US contractors came in and fed liquid nitrogen through the tunnel and to the reactor space, to provide cooling Then all they did was Cover it up with a dome of Concrete, lead and 8000 tons of dolomite, load the core with Sensor’s, and pray) period.

There are some good ideas and there are some bad ones Lets hope for some of the good.
