hey fellow cannabis lovers.im about to setup my grow room and i want to clear some things up.from my resesrch ive come to a conclusoin that a dryer outlet which is 220v at 30 amps has a capacity of 6600 watts so i can have 6 lights total but im only using 4 1000 watt lights so i can have more wattage and amps for fans and a T5 grow light.so my question is,is this setup safe enough?

@scratchgrow in this setup you're probably going to have your lights on 240v and your T5's, fans etc on 120v... You can't safely pull 120v power from 240v per code, so you'll have to figure out something else as far as power for your 120v equip.

Electrical power comes in two flavors.
Single phase and three phase.
There are many online explanations, but they can be confusing. Stay with it until you understand how it works.
I learned from a small book called "home wiring" over 40 years ago.

If your not a sparky, be careful playing with 3 phase...

I'd run a 240 leg and then a 120 or 2 separate 120s (just to keep your panel even) you cant run the 120 off the 240 line without some serious load problems. Unless you are three phase savvy. Or you could run a sub-panel into your room from the main stay panel. if that was the case be sure to keep each leg's load as even as possible. Be sure to draw it out on paper first. Study study study. Be careful and keep it simple.

My suggestion when dealing with three phase..hire an electrician. Besides..what home has three phase power?

Three phase is THE BOMB and using it will save you cash on your power bill but in order to do that you will have to run 277v ballasts. Galaxy makes them. But you also need three wire relays and twist lock plugs. Both of which get expensive

You have to have the third phase bus in the panel to accommodate 3-phase feeder, plus a neutral bus.

Why not just snag a powerbox that plugs into that 30 amp dryer plug? They have 220 and 120 outlets on them and could save you a lot of money hiring an electrician. They are plug and play.

My warehouse has three phase power and it isn't any more difficult to work with then single phase IMO. It's awesome being able to run 24k off a 100 amp sub panel, having the load equally balanced, which you couldn't do with single phase.

And this would allow you 5760 watts of available power, per code. The circuit breaker wouldn't trip if you exceed that for a short time.

im not an electrician, but when setting up my ggrows...i like to oversize the wire and undersize the breaker...i know this sounds weird...but i would rather my breaker trip before my wire heats up...if ya know what i mean...lol

so o =to run my 4 ballasts, i use a 40 amp wire on a 30 amp breaker...each of my ballasts take about 4.5 amps...24 amps would be 80% of my 30 amp breaker..so im well under...i just like to play it safe

The circuit breaker is protecting the wire. With the load your describing #10 would carry the current all day. Stranded wire would be even better. Not knocking using #8, it's just not completely necessary in your case.

Nothing wrong with playing it safe with the sparky stuff.......it hurts when it bites!
