PHOENIX -- A man looking to buy -- and then steal -- medical marijuana is dead after a shooting in a Phoenix park.

It happened Thursday night in El Reposo Park near Seventh Street and Southern Avenue.

According to police, the suspect responded to a Craigslist ad. He and the seller negotiated over the phone and then arranged to meet at the park.

The suspect, a 54-year-old man, approached the seller's vehicle on foot.

"When the seller asked to see the suspect's medical marijuana card, the suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim in an attempt to rob him of the marijuana," Sgt. Trent Crump said in a news release.

When the suspect became distracted for a moment, the seller, who was sitting in the back seat of his car, pulled out a gun of his own and fired several times.

The suspect returned fire, hitting the vehicle at least once.

The victim and several witnesses fled the scene. Responding officers detained and questioned them. Everybody has been released pending further investigation.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, died at a local hospital.

It is not clear if the man who was trying to sell the medical marijuana will face charges.

Of course he will be charged. Here in AZ it is not legal to make any side deals concerning MJ. All sales have to occur in a AZ State registered dispensary and there is no bartering or other arraignments allowed.

Some peeps here think as long as they ask for a card that the sale is legal. IT IS NOT legal here, read the rules and determinations as set forth by the State.

The whole Craigslist hustle is giving legit operators a bad name.

Its sad shit like this has to happen and its sad theres not better ways for medical growers to alleviate them selfs of overages so they can comply with these fucking draconian style laws for now..

But im glad to see the ripper got what he deserved.. Im not really FOR violence , i don't own a gun. got a cpl knifes.. but this was a case of self defense, Supplier while should have known better then to meet strangers for drug deals was smart enuff at least to pack protection in case shit went south.

Again tho if we had better and more legal legitimate ways WITHOUT taxing the living hell out of people...

So I'm waiting on what the charge will be. He didn't make the sale. Is there a charge in AZ attempt to make a sale of weed that didn't happen?

No murder charge No manslaughter change. Self defense all the way; but again @jumpincactus

You have a good point. Upon further reading there wasnt any mention of actual MJ in the vehicle.

Cant a person be charged with conspiracy to sell? The intent was established via the investigation.

It's not good to craiglist yes indeed, but again dude tried to rob him, and he could have killed him. The person in the car was protecting his life. Even if they found weed to, which they probably did, he is legal to carry it.
I don't like for anyone to be killed and it is unfortunate that the guy lost his life over 100-200 bucks maybe at most.

Fuck the thief,he played the odds and didnt win this time,C-Ya.Shooter was within his rights and concealed carry and open carry is legal in AZ without a permit,If he had been selling a bicycle would it be different?
"In Arizona, a person over age 21 may legally carry a concealed firearm or deadly weapon without a permit within the state, except for certain prohibited locations, and must disclose the fact to a law enforcement officer if questioned. Although no longer required, a CCW permit may still be obtained and has certain advantages, including reciprocity with many other states having CCW laws."
"May carry openly without permit/license."
Doesnt sound like An ideal place to try to rip someone off.

@geologic, How do i say this, without saying much. On first time random meetings to complete stranger, your not caring more than a zip/ounce for sale in case it's a rip like what just happend. If he was trying to stay in guidlines, it would be withing that amount. Now for the money part, A zip cost about $200 where I'm from, all day.

So basically the guy could have been purchasing a $20, worth? He gave up his life basically for that mare amount.

Make sense @geologic ;-)

No, it doesn't making any cents to me at all;
I have no idea how much was involved and neither do you,
not that it makes any difference to me;
except I'll take what you say with a grain of , ah--
THC from now on...

Again @nocollins2k you are missing my point. From a legal standpoint and after reviewing the news /data more closely the dude in the car was in his rights and did the same thing I would have done. AZ has very liberal gun laws and I am not saying he should be charged. To recap, the real meat of the matter is stay the f*** away from craigslist for relieving your excess stock. If you have excess try donating it to a coop or to some patients that cant afford thier meds.

Craigslist especially in AZ is a very sketchy place indeed. Can only speak for AZ.

Dude that almost got ripped had placed himself in danger to begin with by even going that route. So he was complicit to some degree. You go to a barber shop enough times your gonna get a haircut. You fuck with CL enough and someone is gonna try to take your shit or your life. No brainer in my part of town.

I have seen plenty of folks get their melon smoked or got dead over less than a 200 zip.

Advertising is sure way to attract mofos that don't give 2 shit# about you ot your family or worse yet LEO. And they don't give a #### bout your family either.

I'm off the soap box.
