Hey man sorry to hear about your struggles. But what doesn't kill you makes you a better grower. I find soil and organics to be tricky, I am locked into it at my current grow. Soil has its upside believe me, but it is a bitch to dial in what works and doesn't, and it probably won't happen in 1 go. I think you will still get some decent bud out of it and that is an accomplishment in and of itself. For next time I would make these suggestions. For the size of tent you are running grow 1 good sized plant. You will yield more than if you try to cram plants in. Also a lot of that burn is likely from a little over watering and ph fluctuation. I've been down that road and it is like quick sand trying to right the ship. All in all though good job for a first time. Interested to see how the bud turns out!

Thanks for the support guys. It's hard to face disappointment with such high expectations, but shit happens. From the looks of it I'd say there is only room to improve now too. I'll post some pictures now that my laptop is up and running again. I think the last photos posted were from before week 3 of flowering. Unfortunately my plants are not improving. We are in week 5 and they're actually getting worse. I've kind of thrown in the towel at this diagnosing game too. I've run out of money to buy them anything, and I've flushed each one a couple of times without results. I've been sure to wait as long as I can (up to 7 or 8 days) between waterings because my gnat issue is getting noticeably worse. Ive tried dressing with some good local EWC when I saw some yellowing on my only green plant, but this didn't change/help anything. I don't think any of them are in any shape to really appreciate a feeding though. But I'll keep at it with the EWC airated tea, and I'll hope through some miracle I can carry them through to harvest. Wish me luck - Haze.

Hey everyone, I'm trying to get around to posting the results of this grow. My last post showed pictures for day 36 of flower. These four plants were harvested on day 60 after seeing that most of the trichromes were cloudy and trending toward amber. The harvest was a pleasant surprise because my expectations were low after seeing the plants suffer for much of the grow. This makes me think they weren't as bad as their leaves were suggesting. Overall I collected about 7oz of dry flowers. Though I had hoped for more at the beginning of this grow, I expected far less by the end of it.

The bud has been curing in the jars for a few weeks now and it smell amazing when broken up. I owe the powerful aroma to my attempts at an organic grow style. I am entirely satisfied with the final product. Although I was able to trim away most of the burnt leaves the buds don't have the best bag appeal. Nonetheless, I am proud to have finished my first successful grow and I will be enjoying the fruits of my labor during these next few months. I plan to post pictures of the harvest sometime soon.

Some final notes on this grow:

• I owe my yield entirely to my light (600w MH/HPS) and my low stress training.
  • training the plants to grow along the rim of the pot allowed for a nice even canopy with many bud sites
  • however, I wish I trimmed lower budsights as to avoid the less dense popcorn nugs
  • If my plants were healthier I would have trimmed more leaves to reveal the budsights better and work towards producing larger nugs
• I wish I mixed my own soil rather than buying Fox Farm ocean forest. It gave me bugs, and I had PH problems throughout crucial moments of the grow.
  • Instead I would create a supersoil mix that would include something like Roots Organic, wormcastings, dolomite lime, guanos, and other trace elements.
  • I would continue to use airated worm casting teas. They really cut down the amount of watering I needed to do.
• I will start with 12.5% of the recommended guano dosage instead of 25% as I believe it burned my plants terribly by contributing to acidic soil.
  • next time I will be sure I have an exact nutrient approach before starting too

This was my first successful grow and I'm happy I went with white widow. Many other strains I suspect would not have survived, and this strain proved how hardy it can be. I think what made my plants vulnerable during the flowering cycle was accidental heat exposure on the second day after they sprouted. They were so small and endured 2+ hours of 100+ degree heat, so that's bound to hurt them. I can recommend this strain for its fruity and piney aroma too, its some of my favorite weed to smell - but, you know, I'm biased for it being my first grow.

Did you ever figure out what it was? I am by no means an expert, but looking back on the earlier pics, could it possibly have been a calcium deficiency? I know once they are ca deficient the old growth never recovers. @Seamaiden would be a good person to ask...

Hey Onetwothree,

As I mentioned before, I think exposure to extreme heat made them vulnerable to other stressors. These other stressors included acidic soil, fungus gnats, low humidity during veg, and eventual nutrient lockout. The nutrient lockout was due to an inappropriate guano application. Furthermore, I hadn't devised a proper nutrient regimen for this grow. Using only earthworm compost teas and top dressing with worm castings and guano was not enough. What happened also was due to the high amounts of phosphorus from the guano a calcium deficiency became severe. I did buy some general organic cal/mag, but I wish I had purchased it sooner - especially considering I watered them with RO water the entire grow.

So there were a bunch of small mistakes and some big ones that contributed to it all. I was really at a loss for words at first when within a week nearly all of the canopy's green leaves turned dead, but I'm comfortable believing it was due to them being vulnerable, infected with gnats, and in soil with low PH.

FFOF doesn't have bugs. Your environment looks bad, and YOU or someone else brought in pests. This was all grower error, not your products. Just saying a true grower will hold himself accountable and not his amendments/media. Especially the comments about PH. Anyways that's out of the way, your on the right path with understanding how things work. Organic is awesome and happy to hear that your gearing towards that. Good luck mate!

Hola senoras y senores,

I've reached day 37 with these four plants without providing any nutrients thus far. All four of them were transplanted into 5gallon pots of Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil 20 days ago. Right now I have a 5gal bucket, a bag of earthworm castings (EWC), and an air-pump on standby for brewing some EWC tea. These guys will need watered in a couple of days, and I still need to run out to the store for some molasses soon to start brewing. In addition to EWC tea I have some Jamaican guano 0-10-0 NPK that I will top dress next feeding 1/4strength.

I am hesitant to provide any nutrients so soon though. The signs of nitrogen toxicity (i.e. clawing fan leaves) have been lingering for a few days now and some leaves show signs of nutrient burn. Although the burn is very minor and I am not sure if the affected tips are just left over from last week, it is enough to make me think twice before feeding them with some EWC which has 1-0-0 NPK ratios. Nevertheless, I've come to understand EWC tea is more for microbial soil growth than nutrient feeding (or perhaps they're one of the same thing haha).

On the other side, I am eager to start dressing these plants soon with some guano as its been almost 3 weeks since transplant and they must be wanting some nutes soon. Furthermore guano takes weeks to establish its microbial affect in the soil, so I figure the earlier I can dress without burning the better.

Just curious how you get nutrient burn when you haven't added nutrients. It's more like they were deprived of nutrients I would think.

Very nice grow! I'm so sorry you had so many problems with it. I'd say you overwatered and worried about pH too much. If you're growing 100% organic you shouldn't even have to pH feeding water. I don't monitor or adjust pH.

Hopefully my mistakes while growing white widow are avoided as I begin my next project. I would like to mention that me and two close friends each experienced fungus gnats. We grew during different years, and we grew in different indoor environments in each case. One shared characteristic, however, was that each of us had used Fox Farm Happy Forest for our seedlings, this was what was recommended to us by different grow shops. Unfortunately, our soil seemed to harbor fungas gnats. Although FFHF soil is marketed across the world and that these gnats could not be in every bag of their soil, our experience was severe enough to encourage us to try other brands.

You wrote that my environment looked bad, and I wonder what you would recommend as being important for proper environment maintenance. I'm always open to thoughtful suggestions. Thank you again! :)

peat is a major calling card for fungus and so fungus gnats also love it. most shop soils have peat, they also have holes on the bags that dont have bio filters. These holes are essential to allow the gas exchange but they are an easy fit for the fungus gnats, drawn in by the likely still composting material. Compost is usually moist and warm. I would take this up with the makers, tell them technology exists to enable air exchange without the potential for bio hazard. Tell them you wont buy anymore until they use a bio tape or other, preventing access for the bugs during the storage and transport phases pre sale. Or tell them that they need to ship a free treatment of nematodes with every bag in order to prevent losses for you as a grower.

here we all are, many users with a similar issue. so en mass write to them, tell them of your boycott, give them a chance to fix or be a part of the solution. if you dont value them, dont use them
