Garden gay I didn't buy equipment fir any special reason, I bought equipment because I like taking pics and wasn't happy with the quality of photos I was getting. I started with a 7d and when that fell short of my expectations I bought a full frame. Why do you keep talking about taking video with a still photo camera you do realise they make cameras for that as well. I have about 5 min total video shot with my still photo cameras if I wanted to shoot video I'd buy a video camera. I'm kind of big on using the right tool for the job. I use weddings as an example because they are a perfect example of what a camera is capable of. The vast majority of my pics are of my family and kids playing, birthdays and sporting events. I take pictures of whatever the fuck I want to. The most interesting shoot I ever did for a person like you would probably have been the pics I took for my friends tattoo shop. Couple of drop dead stunning girls near nude will full back tats. I like long lenses when taking pics of my kids because the best shots I have are when they don't know Dad is taking pics. Yes I am a self indulgent weiner and a lot of the things I buy simply because I have a pile of cash to do it.
If you think I wasted a ton of money on camera equipment you'd shit your g string of you knew what I have wrapped up in my tools and tool box.
Im not trying to knock you bro. Truly.

Im glad you shoot your kids. Thats a very very very good reason. You must have some tasty telephoto lenses. I like to shoot the kids with my bolex 16mm. Even though its expensive, the footage looks like a distant memory. Something truly magical about 16mm. Lemme find something shot on the bolex

You get a little more clarity shooting on 60D day stock instead of 160 But this is a decent example of the ease of shooting something that feels like a distant memory. Ive seen filmmakers switch format to 16mm or even super 8mm to capture a nostalgic feeling to the footage. Beautiful in such a rare way

But really 7D wasnt good enough to shoot yer kids? Lol. 7D is a boss camera with a relatively low pixel rate. I def prefer the 5D mk 2. Great cam as far as crop sensor goes. I guess im just kinda jealous that you got all this amazing shit collecting dust in the corner that id kill to use..when i have to bust my fucking ass just to snag a tokina 11-16 for my crop sensor camera haha.

And just so you know, dslr is not photo specific technology. Not even close.
Very well said, and what reason could be more important than to catch some really great photos of your children and family?
I've never had money, always been on the poor side of middle class, raising three sons on a single income was difficult but, we always prefered to have her at home with our kids. Annyyway, back when I was a mechanic I had a lot of money invested in tools, it's pretty damn easy to do if you want quality stuff to work with. Problem is, by the time I finally found my niche in life and got all that money invested I ended tting this fucking disease and couldn't do it anymore. At this point in my life I could be making good money and it would be just myself and my wife. I'd be doing something I love too, the guy I worked for, and would be still, is primarily just building hot rods and shit these days, I always wanted to be able to just do that shit.
Bums me the fuck out when I think about that shit.
Well, now that I got all that out. Dude, if you've got the money to spend who can fault you for buying the best shit you can get? I try to do that when I can on my limited budget, I sure as hell would if I had plenty.
Im sorry brother. This bummed me out to read. You still have a fire in your heart and i got a lotta respect for you for it man.

:pI don't want to fuck it up, I don't have nearly enough faith in my artistic skills in that medium to try it.
Lmao i just got this image of papa buying 15 white t's and attempting to redo all the art after screwing up the shirt with a jank smurf haha.

Got a printer? Next time just print out a simple smurf image, cut it out, then trace the edges for a simple silhouette. Like all those "artists" who do stencils : )

Since I've been on my own I've been working my way up. I started out sharing a low income ghetto apartment with a friend. When I got into construction I worked my ass off for years to just to have a very modest home and a very little money to enjoy life. I saved up money and when I met my first wife she had a decent job and we were lower middle class for years. Nothing I have was given to me I worked my ass off to get what I have and it took a lot of years of saving and reinvesting instead of buying toys like most of my friends. Now that I'm getting a little older and doing better financially I'm getting some of the things I wanted when I was younger. I still drive a pos truck live in a modest home in a decent neighborhood and my wife drives a pos minivan. For me nice vehicles are nothing but a display of social status. Sure i coukd wrap up all of the money we hsve in a couple of nice vehicles and a nice house but I'd be doing it to show off to the world and I'd have nothing left for family vacations and the little things I truly enjoy in life. I have friends that give me shit about having nice toys and taking vacations with my family after they drive over from their 250 thousand dollars houses in their 60 thousand dollar trucks. Sure I'd like a nice truck or car but my cheap ass vehicles do everything I need them to do. Papa I really feel for your situation and I often you got dealt a shitty hand and I have a ton of respect for the fact that your still trying to make the best of what you have to deal with. It takes a determined mind to not give up and I don't know how you do it.

Honestly the 7d was pretty amazing and I didn't really need anything more but once I got hooked on photography I couldn't stop. My equipment gets used a lot it's not collecting dust at all. The only shirt comings the 7 had was indoor photos. Kids school activities, sports, weddings any thing with poor light and fast movement. I really just wanted a full frame pro camera and after I bought the 7 and lenses the 5 want that much more of an investment. My uncle has been a pro photographer for over 30 years and he influenced my purchases as well. I still just shoot everything on auto mode because these cameras are to complex for me to understand. Your video is great and I'm glad you enjoy photography it's a good clean way to spend money and a very rewarding hobby

You make a good point. My 7D is only utilized outdoors during the daytime for this.exact reason. Waaaay too much gain. There are some simple books thatll teach you the basics of manipulating your settings to get what you want.

Its a relief to hear that your cameras arent collecting dust. I was very disheartened by the very idea of it....

I didnt shoot that video, it was a random off YouTube. Just wanted to express my position on 16mm and share since you brought up shooting the kids. If you got money to waste buy an old super 8mm remember those things? Popularized in the 70s i think.

The footage reels are relatively cheap and the camera easy to use. Everything feels like a distant memory, something really special about em man. I know video isnt your thing, but if you think about it, its exactly the same as photos, only theyre moving so you have to account for everything over a longer period. All the same techniques and art rules apply tho. Rule of thirds, facial contrast, low DOF, flattening, etc etc...

Try keeping a perfect facial shadow contrast on an actor whos not only moving, but the camera is moving as well, all the while maintaining a perfect picture. Its a truly frustrating, yet rewarding experience.

Just fucking with you garden guy. I know my cameras inside and out. I bought books specific to the body's and my uncle is a pro and taught me well. One of the most rewarding experiences of buying my equipment was learning how to use it. I was just trying to bait you, it pisses me off when people buy nice gear and shoot on auto.

Btw id you ever decide to pop that switch over to video, be sure to switch your settings to 24fps instead of 30fps or 60fps(same as 30, specifically for broadcasting) youll be amazed at the difference.

I shoot sports or skateboarding in 29.90 (basically 30fps) but any type of image, stock image, particularly something thats to capture the eye and not reliant on getting every last millisecond of action...i shoot in 24. It looks less like a video camera and more like a movie. I bought the 7D for its black and grey color spectrum. It simply blows the competition out of the water in every aspect of collecting dark blacks and dark greys.

Enough about boring ass cameras let's get some weed talk going here.
It was taking to long for me to step on each individual bud so I came up with this idea.

I dumped some out on a sheet of plywood and then laid another sheet on top of that then jumped up and down on it about a dozen times. This new improved method is going to save me a ton of time

I figured that auto comment would get to you. I know very little of the video side of things. I'd have to do a ton of learning to be confident in that aspect. Couple years ago we were at a state Park with the family camping and I ran into this rich bitch with a top of the line Nikon and at least 20 grand in glass. I started talking cameras with her and she informed me that it was a gift from her husband and she had no clue how to use it. That didn't bother me that much but when she said that auto takes great pics and doesnt understand why anyone would need to learn the other features i was speechless. Conversation done
