So, I have lots of friends who have comertial grows going. I love sitting around the table, sharing a good smoke and talking shop. You pick up lots listing to these guys. All have been doing this for a LONG time and I consider them masters of the trade.

With that said, they grow quite different from me. I am considered, by them, to be a hobby/boutique grower. I am amazed at the techniques utilized by them to get maximum yield and various ways to get the product to market as quickly as possible.

Before I first started growing several years ago now I read several books on growing. Everything from the planing stages to set up, venting exc....... I focused much of my attention to finishing the product. I discovered through trial and error as well as forums like this that the finishing the grow cycle starts well before the plant is harvested.

For example, 30 days from harvest I start working how the final product will taste, smell and smoke. I stop all nitrogen, cal/mag and several supplements. For example, using cal/mag up to harvest will make the smoke harsh and hot on the back of the throat. I stop everything except r/o water at 14 days out and flush at 10 days out.

As far as the dry/cure process goes. Most commercial growers I know try and speed the process up. This is where we really differ. I try and slow it down. I once heard a wine commercial stating " We Will Sell No Wine Before Its Time". Marijuana is the same. I watch my humidity, keep all in total darkness and Take My Time!! My best friend says he dries in 20% humidity and can have product ready in 10 days. Really?

I am totally old school when it comes to this. 60% humidity to start letting the room slowly drop to 50% letting the buds hang until the stems snap, a couple of days in sacks and 30 days in jars before I even think about sampling. I will never smoke or distribute spongy pot.

There is a lot more to the process than just a few short paragraphs but I think you get my gist. So, are you finished?

I feed up until 2 weeks before I chop. Then it's water only with little run off. Cal mag or other nutes stopping at 30 days before you harvest has nothing to do with "hot" throat burn. And your denying your plants much needed nutes for 2+ weeks. I can feed until the day I chop, but with a proper cure, will be better smoke than most other growers. And don't give me the white/grey ash bull shit either. I can make even the shittiest uncured bud turn white/grey. ......all depends on how I wanna trick you with a blow torch to get it white/grey.

Good post. .. don't you think a little bit spongy is ok?

I mean, when I squeeze a bud, I don't want it to fall apart... and at 60%, the bud is not crispy at all and bounces back a bit when squeezed.

Absolutely, didn't mean to dry until the buds turn to dust. After 30 days the buds are still a bit spongy especially if left in a jar for a couple of days.

White/grey??? Blow torch?? Didn't mean to get your goat Mr commercial grower.

No commercial grower here. I grow elite fire in my garden. I just know how to do it.

So I don't smoke a lot, But my weed is hot on the back of my throat. I was out with some of the big dogs this past weekend and smoked some of theirs. Nice and smooth. What I brought only had a week in the jar nobody wanted to smoke it lol. I was accused of not having any passion with my grow. I hadn't smoked any of it yet so the next day a friend stopped by and we burnt one, yep harsh. My friend says it's not harsh and tastes real good.

I hang big branches start at 60% in the dark most of the time. Hang till the buds snap off the stem 10-14 days. But the stems still bend. I usually can't keep it long enough to put into a jar lol.
Last run I did cut out the si, mg, and ca 3 or 4 weeks befor chop. I start cutting back on the ppms 3 weeks out and just water and blackstrap molasses for the last 10 days. I'm going to at least keep some jars and cure it to see if it will help.

Great thread Put.

Who said anything about drying my flowers with a blow torch? Please go back and reread what I read. It will make perfect sense to you.

A little stoned so.... Most of what I know/have learned I have gotten from this site. All grows are different. With that said....Demon is probably has an organic grow going. My main line nutes are Chemical so we are different in how we finish. I flush you don't.

Regarding cal/mag. I was involved in a thread on here years ago regarding hot/harsh feeling in the back of the throat. Texas Kid (who is apparently gone from here) chimed in and said it was the cal/mag late in flower. Stop it 30 days out was his advise! Thinking it worked as my smoke is now cool, smooth and tasty. If you know who TK is....you listened.

However, friend, your first post was a little aggressive....so the retort. Lets have a civil discussion and not measure each others dicks.....

Things I have been doing recently..I build up the CalMag in veg (chems get extra mag..og clones get extra cal) and they only get what my nute base has already in flower (this has made a huge difference). At the end of flower..2 weeks of RO only with a touch of organic molasses during that first week. Chop time, I hang whole plant fans and all in a cool dedicated room no fans no air exchange..at 50% RH for 3-4 days then kick it up to 60% RH for the remainder..plants usually hang for 14 days. Nothing goes out the door before 3 weeks min. I found it's very hard to over-dry plants that hang whole this way..they retain a softer texture compared to small branch drying even in the presence of low humidity
I don't listen to jokers who say you're starving the plant. My plants stay healthy in flower..because they get the amount of food they need when they need it. I've experimented with feeding a plant all the way through with added calmag..most strains will fade/yellow when they are ripe food or no food...and more seldom some stay nice and green even when mature.

I have a huge penis....no but really i have dried weed in under 6 days and had my patients say its some of the best weed they have had.after that i really quit worrying about cure times so much.sure i like to pull nugs from my private stash that been jarred for months.but in order to keep the flow going i cant ever keep shit jarred for weeks let alone months.nobody in my circle has ever complained unless the strain was shitty to begin with.
I like a good 12 to 14 flush,i use chem nutes.but the whole deal is questionable. Real Organic growers use water only from day 1,are we to think they never flushed or should we assume they grew in flushed soil from day 1 lol ?
Im certain the fluids running through the plant can be flushed with clean water.but the buds made with chems will Not mysteriously change chemically if we stopp feeding them the last 2 weeks so idk anymore.

Interesting Natural......you don't use jars? I find some strains retain their smell throughout the whole process. However, many strains start to smell like straw after a few days hanging and don't get the natural smell back until they go into jars. The longer they stay in the jars, up to around 30 to 40 days, the quality and smell gets better. I do believe though that many peeps don't care about smell or taste.....they just want to get stoned.....

oh gosh..I think bag appeal means more to folks than potency around my way. I put personal in jars. Honestly whole plant hanging in proper temps/humidity I've never had a problem with terps. The donks aren't even really dry enough to smoke after 10 days of hanging..I often have to burp turkey bags to get them just right. I guess mid summer some plants are plenty dry for trimming after a week..but mostly it takes longer for me. It's important to get them sealed up once separated from the main branches..but I see no difference in terps if still attached to the main plant. I certainly did have issues when I used to wet trim smaller branches..would have to micromanage my enviro and timing or I would end up with a less terpy/potent product.

As long as it feels as good as it taste, and taste just like it smells....then im a happy, biased, satisfied consumer...its just a bummer when its blingy and reaks of heavenly gardens....then taste like brick weed roaches (dispo buds)....hats off to the chronnissuer hobby growers who provide only what they themselves would consume....

Cherrish the priveledge my brothers and sisters, its an un-articulatable punishment not being able to grow and smoke your own...

Long term storage in jars also is interesting. I have heard peeps say they stashed pot in a jar for a couple of years and when opened the buds are as fresh and good as the day it was harvested. I have never been able to keep any of mine around that long. But, with that said I do have two strains that have been in jars for a few months now. Lucinda and Pez. One thing I have noticed is that if left completely alone for a couple of months the jars get a sour smell when burped. No worries though, once I burp and change the air within the jar the next day everything is normal again. Wondering what the buds would smell/taste like after 2 years???...... Anybody??

a little tip .....

try putting them in the dark ( 96hrs ) then pulling them out and put them back in the sun ( outdoors ) for another week or before chop ~

just test one plant. then get back to me .....
