Hello everybody, was wondering if anybody has a spot they buy Aloe flakes, coconut water powder and malted barley for SST. I usually buy from Build-a-soil, but the shipping and extra expense has become too much. I am in Nor Cal, any suggestions would be great.

I use the malted barley extract made for brew kits. It is extremely concentrated. Northern Brewer is where we've gotten all our homebrew stuff from for the most part.

I wonder if it stays warm enough in your GH to grow coconut palms. I would love to have fresh coconuts available, I tell you what! You'd also have to grow limones, to put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up.

lots of choices on that site @Seamaiden. Is there a product that isn't milled, and works best for SST?

I couldn't tell you that. Malted barley is barley that's been sprouted then roasted, it seems to me that just about any form will work here, but you may need to boil whole barley as for wort to get the good stuff out. I personally would go for something that's been through a mill, then I'd put it into a strainer bag. Once used, it would then be incorporated into soil OR used to feed animals such as chick-hens.

So .... Ive read about SST and am strongly curious about them and want to implement.

Barley SST ... Wouldn't it be cheaper just to get pond enzyme concentrate already pre made? Its super cheap on PetMountain website.

Or do fresh sprouts have better results?

So I'm curious, why not just cut off some aloe and squeeze it into your tea? Wouldn't that be cheaper, easier, and fresher then aloe flakes?
My thought was pure aloe liquid or gel, although I'm sure fresh leaves without any preservation probably is best?

Don't know if it's any better or would even matter to the plant really? I'm just thinking it would be cheaper and easier. Aloe plants heal pretty quickly and they're easy to grow. I keep one next to my grow for cloning and those odd times I burn myself on a light (because I'm clumsy...). It's a nice plant to have around and adds to the scenery.

Agreed. But I imagine the more raw, not dehydrated, live, fresh = most enzymes, vitamins etc. Like us; a fresh salad beats a Twinkie, even if at some point it was vegetables. Maybe disgusting GMO , Monsanto, glyphosate and poison covered. But it had to start with whatever % isn't recycled plastic.

Isn't pond enzyme made from bacteria though? Sprouted seed tea is just that, tea made from sprouted seeds.

Yes. Unless you have fucking chickens that break out and get your aloe vera. Fucking chickens! I now have exactly ZERO aloe vera of my own. Fucking chickens!

That is awesome!

A fox almost got one of my birds the other morning. Had her right in its jaws. I came out onto the balcony after hearing her odd squawks, see the biggest God damned fox I've ever seen and starting screaming like a banshee, started throwing things at it. Dropped her right away but took its sweet old time taking off from there.

One more reason to get that football. That would scare it away, it makes everyone throw like Brett Favre.
These are your new ones? How old are they?

No, the new ones are staying cooped up since my broody hen decided she wasn't gonna be their Momma. This is my main flock, birds I've either had for 3yrs already, or birds that were bred here on the property. The fox got a hold of one of my older Silver-laced Wyandottes. Took all the feathers out of her back, but thank God she's so heavily feathered because that was all he got.

Pretty sure pond enzymes are barley based. They sell barley bales to drip into ponds. Not sure if they are pre inoculated with bacteria though?

I believe barley is the foundation of enzyme culture and concentrate? For freshwater ponds at least?
