Is 1000w Led Too Intense?

I love the wealth of info thank you everyone. Is it difficult to build your own light? I'd like to think I'm a handy guy but when it comes to electrical I'm not too sure of myself. Are there any lights worth buying that are good to go out of the box for a somewhat reasonable cost? Tho I'm going to start watching some videos on building your own light.

Just my opinion but that spectrum looks kinda blue/red but not as bad as some. Looks like blurple color.
On their color space plot they show it right in the white space but if you look at the spectrum it doesn't jive with a very white color. DIY allows you to select 80 or even 90 or 95 CRI COBs (color redition Index) that will be very true color. In these ads for packaged commercial fixtures you almost never see a CRI rating.

The other thing that bothers me about these "packaged" lights is the COBs are so close together that the light footprint will be hot in the center and drop away quickly as you move outward. This means your actual usable area for your grow will be very small.

A DIY COB can have 12" or so between COBs and if you use chips that draw 40-60 watts you'll have the light intensity you need and it will spread out evenly.

Yup too much light is not allowing them to grow too much light for a small space like that, and your plants prolly all purple at the stems showing mag deficiency cause of the too much light issue, it's amazing how many noobs are killing their plants with LED every where.

Get your self some T5 light for small spaces fuck LED all them lights do is kill your shit or miniaturize it when used in small grows.
Yup t5s are safe good lights for veg. And have flower bulbs too. I like combo of t5 and adding led and switching bulbs to 3000k in flower. Running 4 foot 8 bulb t5 with 1200w cobs on each end. In 4x8. I’m thinking too much light too. Some dwarfed and some explosive growth but really tight together. And I think mine are a little light in color. So maybe deficient. Just started nutes. Only 3weeks old.

Most LEDs sold on Amazon, Ebay and the like are crap but good LEDs are out there that will kick ass. Most of the bad press on LED's is caused by these dealers that sell lights based on absolute lies in their specs.

LEDs are some off the best lights next to CMH and I am seeing results that I have never seen before with amy HPS setup at all. Right now I am burning 750 watts max in my flower room and getting better light than a 1K HPS.

I would recommend this for about the same price or I would build one like shown below. These are optimized for a 2X4 space with the right light color, on the right spacing, with intensity dimming, made for this exact purpose.

I built my 3 COB system for $330, the Rapid Luminous system is $419 but it has 5 COBs and even better spacing. 3-4 will work fine too.

RapidLED 5 Luminous COBS $419:
Capture

My design which costs about $330 and works just fine for a 2X4 tent, Yes it is DIY but super easy and simple:

What is the actual draw of that light?

Maybe 4x QB132 = $133 USD (no heatsink needed)
1x Meanwell LRS-360-36 driver $40 (one can drive all 4 in parallel)
Fishing leaders Hangers, wagos, misc BS = $25...

start here

Thank you! I'll check it out!

Just my opinion but...

you guys rekon this light works to grow cannabis? it looks like the led's are spread out nicely so it shouldn't have that deadly "Hot Spot" some of these LED lights have....

Hey @V420, you’ve been given some good advice, with the cob kits or the quantum boards, T5’s for veg, I’m getting the bad feeling that you may be attempting to drive traffic to the light you’ve mentioned several times.
If you feel it’s a good light and decide to ignore the responses to your original question, go for it. Good luck

I feel like when it comes to vegging you can get by with some compromises but in the end a proper light is always going to be a better choice in the long run. My experience has been that I spent far too much money "trying" a lot of different things and if I would have had the advice of this forum I would have spent about half or less. However, I really learn by banging into the walls and doing a lot of experimentation so I take it as just one of those things I tend to do but if you want to do things more efficiently than I did then study a lot, ask and then execute. There really are no shortcuts in lighting that I can see.

I started out with a shitty shop light for veg and worked my way up to much better technology and for someone on a budget I suggest you scrounge up what you need from wherever (friends, you stuff in the garage, surplus shops etc) but then save your pennies for the good stuff. Limp along with what you have while targeting the proper setup. In the end you'll spend less and waste less time than I did:) .

Just tested the lux/foot-candles/lumens on my Rapid led cob set up, as I’ve no means of checking par, 49000 lux @ 24”, so you’d need 13 of those fixtures in a 4x4 area to equal light intensity, not sure with the spectrum, lol.

Sounds about right, I use 12 for 4x4. However, mine are running 65w each so plenty bright for flower.

Sorry I've been looking and reading through the wealth of info you guys have given me. I'm very appreciative..all haven't made it so the way through the six string cobs thread. I've also been reading elsewhere and watching a bunch of grow out videos. I've decided to take the advice you guys have been giving me. I went way over my 200$ budget and ordered a 205w Cree cob set up with 30 red and blue diodes. Next it to build my own light. I have everything I want in mind but I'm still unsure of matching up drivers with cobs. I know the info is out there I just gotta find it unless someone here knows off hand which driver would be best to run 2 cxa 2520 Cree cobs. I plan to build something small to get my feet wet and scale up from there. My plants have also been doing much better the last week or so.. I think the one guy was right that they were revegging because I'm seeing more and more growth every day. What is everyone's thoughts on trimming leaves during the veg cycle? Is that a big nono? Anyhow I'm thankful for all the advice I've already been given and look forward to chatting more and learning more about growing. I'm always open to ideas and suggestions!!

Actually I'm not, I'm trying to figure out what would work best. It's my first grow and I'm on a tight budget. I'm not trying to drive traffic to the few links I posted. Would you really buy it anyway? You guys clearly know way more than me. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of leds and how they work so what better place to ask? If I wanted to drive traffic to a specific website I'd use fiver. I was not ignoring anyone here, just asking some questions that's it.

Don't waste your time on cxa series cobs. Those are older generation cobs and 2520 is a 20W nominal power cob. If you want to get your feet wet, get yourself at least cxb3070. Those aren't expensive and could be easily run at 70 or watts if properly cooled. I have 2 pairs of those running of a lpc-150-2100 driver at about 1900mA with cpu heatsinks. You could also have 4 runnin off a 1050mA driver for higher efficiency.

In trying my best to grasp led lighting. When it comes to this kinda stuff I gotta watch videos over and over again. I will look into those cxb cobs. I'm looking to build a good veg light with either 1 or 2 cobs then to build a 4 cob setup for the flower section. Any suggestions on where the best place is to get those in Canada? Digikey? Or somewhere else?
