Matanuska Thunderf**k...tomorrow's The Day

Tomorrow marks the 8 week celebration of going 12/12 for my ancient strain of Matanuska Thunderf**k, a strain I've maintained for 30+ years. Its mostly if not entirely Sativa and has turned purple over the last few days. It's a monster when grown outdoors and unruly indoors as it grows like crazy. The buds are like the Lambsbreath type, not the rock hard nuggs of recent breeds. I used Eye Blue bulbs for vegging and HPS/MS1000 for flowering. 4 months from the popped bean.
These old strains seem a lot different than the more recent genetics. Newer strains have become much stronger, but these are unchanged since they came back from the Alaska Pipeline, decades ago.

Very nice. I had some seeds of that about 15 years ago. Never had a chance to grow them out. I kinda doubt it was the real deal, just whatever heavens stairway was stocking at the time. Always wondered how they would have turned out.

I have had these stashed away for decades and I'm surprised that any of them still pop. Not too many did, but enough for another run...plus I have some clones and (hopefully) a couple of fem seeds from it. Regarding the name and strain...back when I got these, there weren't too many "brand" names other than Acapulco Gold, Panama Red, and a few others...in reality, who knows where or what these were since there isn't really much heritage available abut these. I have no idea what the original Matanuska was...a sativa/Indica, or a mix since I never saw a true Matanuska plant grown in Alaska. The seeds came from Alaska from the pipeline workers, who called it the Matanuska Thunderf**k. Whatever it is, it resembles little that you see being sold lately and is an old strain. It isn't the strongest stuff compared to more recent offerings, but it IS original, whatever it's lineage might be. It would be interesting to have genetic searches available like they do for people.

I had a bunch of matanuska TF seeds from 25+ years back,They came from my cousin who lives in the matanuska valley.I sent them to Medusa before she left the farm to work with but im pretty sure germ rates were dismal.The stuff i had was a pure sativa,i always thought it was some kind of thai as it grew like 14ft outdoors and was lanky like bamboo,airy light buds but good stony smoke.It took a long time to finish,like 12+ weeks.

Your description pretty well sums it up. I grew them once in a 14' ceiling old house, and they went the whole way up. Lanky, fluffy/airy buds (used to call it Lambsbreath back in the day) and it's turning a deep purple the last few days. I was planning on taking them down yesterday, but now it might be tomorrow. I usually run these for 3 full months, but they finished much faster this season for some reason. I used a HPS and a MH for finishing, but both lights seem to have the purpling equally. They aren't great producers as they usually take a while to finish, grow tall and lanky, and the buds aren't too solid...they look alien compared to the Grandaddy Purple, Black Diesel, and another newer strain I have next to them. I was hoping to save the pollen from the male plant I had, bt it got away from me before I had a chance to catch it. Still have a couple of beans left...I can try again. I'm hoping that I got a couple fem seeds from it, but haven't located any yet...lost track of the treated branch. Short term memory loss.

Hopefully some day soon they will be able to do that. It would be cool to be able to trace the genetic make up of what each strain is
