I am used to growing under multiple hps lights where there is a lot more light penetration than cob led's and I was wondering how much do you trim the under canopy(bud sites and leaves) in order to get a good yield but not have a lot of larf or unfinished buds at the bottom of the canopy. It seems like you have to trim a decent amount more than under traditional hps lights

I think it varies by person and how you grow. I usually cut everything off to the 3rd or 4th node up from the soil. I dont grow with a scrog. I use bamboo stakes. It depends on how full my room is and how the light penetrates

what kinds of yields are you getting? I am trying to get similar or better than an hps which would be 2# per 1000w roughly. I am 3 runs in with my leds and I love them and the quality they produce I just seem to have a hard time getting similar yields as an hps set up for instance

I get better yields by far with led over hpsits the main reason i switched from hps to led and cobs

good to know. It is the only "weakness" I can see with led but it is probably just me not being as familiar with led lights than hps or cmh. Thank you for the input!
I think it depends on the quaility of lights aswell bro like anything theres good and bad what ive found is 600watts draw seems to replace 1000w hps

i am getting ready in a few weeks to start my first led grow. i going with 2 HLG-600 quantum boards and two G8LED 90 Watt LED all red grow light in a 10'x7'x7.5 'w/C02. in my opinion i think a scroug would be the best choice with leds. for the reason of penetration . i am hoping the G8LED 90 Watt all red LED will help to penetrate the canopy during flower?

I like an 18"-24" thick canopy. Everything below that gets shaved. I usually do a partial strip about a week before I flip, and the final cleanup about 2-3 weeks after I flip. Like this.

I strip everything that isn't keeping up with the main colas. Especially the lowers. You will want to pay attention to your centers as well. I lop anything that doesn't look like or seems it will always be trying to keep up with the main shoots. This devotes a lot more of the plants energy and nutrients to the stronger mains.

Scrog is your best bet with lesser canopy penetration compared to your hid days as it will keep equal amounts of par / ppfd evenly across your canopy. Be sure to keep everything under the screen cleaned if you choose to go scrog style

Thank you for the information! I was thinking the same thing of stripping more off than normal as well as scrog/ bending everything close to flip so that one branch can cover the most amount of area while still having the lowers stripped.

Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for!

Its worth mentioning that I grow with HID, not COBs. as you can probably tell from my pics. Sorry, it was early... I replied without reading the entire OP.

I also do most pruning a little at a time so once I get to flip all the major lopping is done. You can still prune in flower but try to keep it to a minimum. Stress is stress but doing small amounts wont hurt and pays dividends in yields as I mentioned all that energy the plant is shooting to the lowers that are struggling will then go to feeding the more active stronger main tops.

Ive actually found no need to scrog if you pull your plants over and train them low only time ive needed to scrog is when ive let the plants get to tall then the branchs cant support the wieght and collapse

how many plants do you usually put per 4x4/600w of leds?

I run a 5 x 5 with 2 600's and typically start with 16 to 20 but since I mostly run regs and no fems by the time I cull the males it breaks it down to around 8 gals in a 5 by 5 plenty of room to spread their wings.

okay that is around what I was thinking. I am doing 4 or 5 plants for my 400w to see how everything fits and to re test my keeper phenos
