I've been trying to come up with a simple system for my grow to log and compare traits from plant to plant. The goal is to select the best partner for my first attempt at a cross. I would love some imput from fellow farmers, like the traits you select for and how to keep track of it all. I already keep a detailed grow log and would love to incorporate them both together. So far here's what I have:

VEG
Growth: vigor/ease cloning
Nodes: spacing/branching
Color/Look: Indica/Sativa
Training: ease/recovery?

FLOWER:
Stretch: intensity/duration
Structure: tight/loose/foxtail etc.
Smell: my best guess at terps? Idk
Color: obvious duh lol
Trichomes: development/density
Finish Time: days to harvest

So what am I missing? Or what should I not bother with? Are water and feed level important for selecting? Things like that are where I get blindsided by lack of experience...

Love this thread btw ❤🌱

So there is a great thread on DJ Short's catalog system on here. I'd look into that.

Other than that, I would keep it simple and think about true breeding and hybrid vigor.

But that's probably obvious from my input already lol.

In terms of the traits you can select for....from Clarke.

Have I mentioned I love this book?

Awesome! Thank you! See? I totally missed PESTS!! How careless! 😔 I'm spoiled though because my situation has some natural advantages staying bug free 🤞

Spreadsheet with each characteristic as well as the strength of that characteristic to scale (whatever you determine to be most/least). If you set it up this way, at least you can sort by multiple variables.

I ate two 60mg cookies last night so it’s taken me this long to catch up to you guys lol

I’ve been keeping track of growth, resilience to PM and pests, branching, etc

BUT most important for me is how it smokes, how it affects my mind (vastly subjective I know) This is medicine for me so that’s a huge factor.
Problem is though that I have to keep clones until end of curing to find that out.

Agree about the subjective part and curing is really based on the skill of the grower. Plus, isnt the smoke the sum total of all your selections? Hard to know which part of the equation to change to produce a given result.

I have notes on a video on chemovars that is toward that question on my diary. My current mental model is terps modulate cannabinoids. I need to research the latter by science but the former can be judged more intuitively I think by the senses.

As I gain more experience I am hopeful I can develop a better intuition re: what my senses are telling me and what I know of past situations where my senses told me something similar and how that smoked. That's going to be a very long game, but the only way forward ain't through a screen. I use glass jacks anyhow 🙃

I have a 1:1 thc/cbd auto plant going now and the medicinal factor is going to be big for me on that grow. Maybe eventually I will be courageous enough to try and self one? 🤔🤪

I think the geno and/or pheno coupled with environment produces that result. But your nose can do some diagnosing along the way. I’m also just not going to start a project with a terp profile that isn’t my bag if that makes sense.

Cannabinoids also regulate other cannabinoids. Ie CBD & THC correct next if I’m wrong.

I can’t use my nose to analyze the cannabinoids though. We can for terps.
I don’t think this is too far fetched. Q-graders have been doing this with coffee.

How about light levels? Does the plant crave more light than you gan give her, or does she make huge flowers in weak light?

My lights throw 1000 umol across a big part of my canopy and I don't supplement co2 so I think I've hit my ceiling as far as that's concerned right? My ambient co2 in the lung room is 700-800 but it drops to 500 to 550 in the tent.
