A buddy of mine believes that topping does NOT produce a higher yield.

True or false?

I believe this statement is completely false.

thanks for your feedback!

Compared to what?
I think topping compared to no training at all increases yield but I'm not sure about topping compared to lst.

I find that it yields more, but there are other benefits. More quality bud, less larf. Also, those giant single colas can be prone to botrytis- if you have more colas with less diameter, they are less likely to get bud rot and if they do, at least they are separated from each other so you can cull the funky one and not lose a big chunk of the crop.

Indoors, it depends on a lot of things. I prefer LST because I don't want to spend the extra time in vegging. LST, when done right, can give you all the benefits of topping without losing that top vegetation and this usually means more yield than topping alone.

However

If you were to spend the extra time in vegging such as "mainlining" for example ... you can significantly increase your yield of quality bud.

So many variables to consider for final results. In other words it depends.

Therefore, @MIMedGrower's answer is probably the best answer ... it all depends ...

Everyone wants a definitive answer to all these questions. Top or dont. Flush or dont. Defoliate or dont.

But the answer is always β€œit depends”

It depends. Identical clones side by side the one that's topped produces more bud than the untopped bud. That said, it also takes up more time and space. So it can easily be argued that the untopped bud has a better relative yield. Try a side by side with identical clones in one 2 x 2 tent top the clone and in the other 2 x 2 tent fill it with 16 untopped clones. When your crops are done, figure your yield by dividing total weight by days in tent. All other things being equal-light- nutes etc- the tent with more plants vegged shorter will almost always have a better relative yield.

with squat indicas topping may prove better. May. but with fast growing sativa leaning hybrids like sour diesel for example i yield higher bending plant in week 2 of 12/12 to turn it into a bush than ever topping them. Removing plant matter only ever recovers with more time anyway. Like you said.

Just edidit that typo. should have said shorter veg. And I agree with you strain matters.

More typos, the fudge is kickin in I give uo

LOL must be good fudge

That's exactly why I prefer to use lst. Topping takes time to replace the vegetation. I start shaping the plant by tying down the main stem during mid veg. After a couple of days, I release it from being tied down. I keep repeating that through out veg and end up with nice bushy plants and an even canopy through out the grow area.

Lst for most autos , I missed this one by couple of days , but canopy should be pretty even. Haven’t messed with the photos yet growin em au natural for now, tried topping I personally didn’t like it.

Higher yields, maybe not, more quality and even yields sure, less popcorn bud...for sure... but topping alone , without defoliation ? I would leave an outdoor plant without topping for best result. Indoor, lst and a little topping helps.

Every grow is different. Everybody will have their own opinion. Depending on genetics depending on the light source depending on the nutrients depending on the environment and depending on the type of media. Will have different outcomes. It could increase it if done right yeah.

I top mine 3 times then flower them and i get 4 to 5 ounces a plant with wedding cake. Alot goes into growing. Its more about facts and doing it than somebodies opinion.

Compared to not topping. I get monster colas and my belief is that if i top durng veg state i should be able to increase the number of monster colas. my buddy thinks the total yield will stay the same - while i might have more colas, overall they're going to be smaller.
