First plant (pic 1+2)
Hello, it’s my first grow.
Today I went to bend the main stalk on one of my plants. I noticed 3 hollow brown holes... is this a pest?
One thing I can say is that I bent the stalk the opposite way the day before. Could it be an issue from me bending it? (Very gentle bend so the leafs pointed downwards n r same height as lower leaves). It’s the first day I noticed it so not sure how long it been there.

Second plant (pic 3+4)
I have also noticed what looks like a pest eat one of my leaves... the tip of the leaf looked like it had been nibbled although the leave was still there. I don’t have any pets. Could this be the result of a normal house pest like a spider? I know that spiders sometimes try eat plants but they dislike them so don’t bother actually eat it (Not spider mite)

last plant (5+6)
This plant has discloulored blotches on small area of 2 leaves. I have shown u one leave and the back of the leav in the pics

Info -
plant 1 + 3 are skywalker auto mephisto

Plant 2 is probably toof decay mephisto (was a freebie)

Temp - 22% - 26%

Light - Meijui 240w, 18inches at half power

Nutes - just started today wait biobizz calmag and biobiz grow

Soil - using biobiz all mix for bottom half, biobiz light mix for top half. Suppose to have enough nutes for first 2-3 weeks

PH - just started ph today. Before this my PH was about 7.7

Pot - 3gal

Closet grow about 1m-60cm-2m

You might have a stem borer of some species or another.

I'm sure they'r not good for the plant, but when I've had them, the plant grew and produced normally. I didn't know about the stem borers until I chopped and split the stem. They hollow out the middle of the stalk.

What can you do about it? There might not be anything you can do for the borers in the stem (if that's what this is), but spraying with Bt should stop any further incursions.

BT if you see signs of the larva which is most likely. However inspect the underside of all leaves for egg clusters and rub them off and destroy the eggs.

If you can phyically find the worm, I am interested to see if it's a corn borer or a hemp borer.

The plant will recover from borer damage if its not all encompassing.

Upon a second reading, you might have just made some damage during bending. I get this from time to time when super cropping and slightly careless. I've had main stems that you can see right through, nothing giant but light passes through just fine. However the discoloration in the leaves doesn't track with normal bending damage as far as I can tell.

If you are unsure, BT won't hurt anything anyway and is relatively cheap. So a quick spray is probably in your best intrest. Good luck and always check the underside of the leaves, it's usually where most insects are going to lay their eggs.

Okay thanks, do u know the common source of these stalk borers? Are they likely to fly inside my house through windows, or do they come from somewhere else? Unfortuanly my closet isn’t fully air right or sealed off yet, still trying to work out a good way to keep it air tight cos there’s a gap under the door. Also what is Bt?

I’ve inspected the underside of leaves and can’t see anything but maybe my eye sight is just shit

The disclouored leaves are on the other plant, not the same one as the holes in stalk.

I’m growing 3 plants and all 3 have a different issue.

Plant 1 has hole in stalk.
Plant 2 has torn leaf
Plant 3 has discolored leaf

Are u aware of the source of these worms? Do the usually come from outside or how can I prevent this from occurring again?

I just looked up BT and will order some now!

As for under the leaves, I can’t see anything but will keep checking daily

If you are located in Colorado it is most likely a hemp borer as there is a massive infestation there. Borers are the larval stages of different moths. So if you have a lot of moth activity in or around your growing area thats most likely your culprit. BT is short for Bacillus thuringiensis a bacteria that will attack catepillars and worms. There are several brand name BT sprays. I've only used DiPel in the past which isna dry flowable, but they all work just fine.

Most folks on the west coast use Safer caterpillar killer (it’s bt product). Works pretty good for bud worms too which usually come from pine tree areas I don’t know about stem borers but they both come from moths.

Hey I’m in London the UK, I have been looking up borers in the UK and I’m not sure if its the same variety or a European type we have here. There isn’t much info available online for UK growers and pest that I can find.

I’m trying to work out the exact life cycle. As it’s May, so late spring time. Which according to the American borer life cycle would suggest that it’s perfect time for moths to get inside my house and I defo see a small moth flying around the other day. The borer moth u speak of apparently is very small, wingspan approx 1.5mm. So it might have been that. :(

Now I’m trying to work out from the life cyle does that mean the moth itself has bored its way into the stalk or does this mean the moth has laid eggs somewhere like on the leaves and the worm things have already bored their way into the stalk?

Bit confused on how these buggers operate

They lay eggs on the leaves then they hatch a worm and it does the damage. I know nothing about uk pests specifically sorry. I know bt products work well though and are safe

If you're in UK then it's most likely a european corn borer. They are very prevelent in the US, but are native to your side of the Atlantic.

Hello there, it’s definitely a borer I get them outside every year in S.E Ontario. Have you put them outside at all?

No I have not put them outside. I did see a moth fly about my house about 1 week ago.
Can a borer get in my house or do they prefer to be outside ?

Yes bugs can get inside. They prefer to be anywhere there's a food source i.e. your plants.

Heya farmer look up Eurasian Hemp Borer it sure looks like that’s what’s going on. They can cause plenty of damage to your plants and sometimes even death. About 4 years ago I had one get into my main stem just like your plant and the top of the plant wilted and looked dead I very quickly topped the plant below the holes just above the lower node and sealed it with a tight cord then sealed it with melted wax. It saved the plant and side branches started growing fast. I noticed small holes here and there on some of the other branches ahhhh! So seeing these seem to travel upwards what I did and still do is I squashed the stem with my fingers from the node below the holes upwards to the next 2 nodes. The stems popped and split all the way up hoping to squash the little bastards and it seems to work. The stem recovers just fine you may have to splint it but that’s rare. Any branches that you see these holes it get after them right away. BT works if you catch them on the surface but it’s not to often you see them out and crawling around. I’m an outdoor grower and I check my plants early in the morning and that’s usually when I see them at first they are green like your plant so they are hard to see as they mature they turn orangeish red

Thanks for the reply. It’s an autflower so not sure if she will recover from me sqaushing the stem but it’s the only option I have so I’ll do it in the morning.

These holes in my stem are about 2-3mm small, is that how small they was on your plants?

Also as long as these pests don’t kill the plant before i harvest, will it actually cause my crop to be bad or can I still smoke the crop?

Hey there they can vary in size typically you will start to see little shit balls coming out of the holes and stem swelling very near the holes. I have only done this on photo periods. I’m not sure how an auto would react to topping it as I did since some don’t recommend this with auto’s. The main stem is Not a good spot to play with unless it was my plant. Sorry man! I hope it doesn’t spread to your other plants. Wish I could offer up more help

The spots look like Septia... a fungus from cool wet temps and high humidity. Cut them off (looks like rust drip stains.) cut em off, and stop watering w light on, and overwatering will promote ... from what I’ve read. The water drops w light act like a magnifying glass when lights are on

heya farmer how’s the plant with the holes doing? The one with the torn leaf might have happened while getting moved around? Nothing to worry about. How are they doing now?
