Hi all,

I am an outside grower that grows in a small greenhouse, which is located next to my window.
This year I had some late starters. Currently I have some 2 week olds and one that now has 6 nodes. I would love to try the topping/fimming technique for once but unfortunately the days are getting shorter already. As for now, the night brings about 10 and a half hours of darkness, which means that the first signs of flowering will pop up anytime soon. I would extend the veg-stage by manually placing it inside every evening, in a room with the lights turned on, but the problem is that I im not always at home.
Would it be possible to place a small desk-lamp (7 watts) in front of the window that is connected to a time-adjustable-outlet? I would program the light so that it would give another 2 extra hours of light are given after sunset. Would this weak light shining trhough the window pointed at the plant be enough to prevent the plant from flowering? The image added is from the biggest plant (in front of the window). Any advice is appriciated!

Thanks in avance.

You can add supplemental lighting to extend your hours but a small spot light through a window I don't think that will cut it. imho its more likely to contribute to making it go hermie than doing what you want. Check out the pics from Dragon Flames Genetics page here. He's in Hawaii and need supplemental lighting for his crops and you can get an idea of what you need to do it successfully.

Ambient light will prevent flowering, if there's enough. I can't tell you whether a 7w bulb would do it, from some unknown distance.

Thanks for your input. I can't seem to find the page you are talking about tho.

It would be at a disctance of 50 cm (20inch) at max, there isn't too much light in the greenhouse, but it is clear enough to see when the lamp shines trough the window. I heard that some people's plants revegged because of some small beeping ledlight, so that made me think it would work. It's like 'an extra 2 hours of dusk'.
Anyway, the extra light left aside, do you think it would be worth it to still top it?
also thanks for replying

You only need to hit the plant with light for a few minutes during the dark cycle.

Use 50w or 60w equivalent LED flood lights and put them on a timer so your plants aren't getting more than 5 consecutive hours of darkness. Sounds like you can run them for under an hour now but it will grow as the season progresses. I run mine from 12:30am to 2 am right now. That costs about $0.0001 per light per day to run.

You must use soft (warm) white bulbs 2700K spectrum.

Position them 2-3 feet above the plants. One bulb covers a 5-6 ft diameter

Plants tell time by darkness. When the lights come on they reset the plant's internal clock and trick them into thinking another day has passed.

Having lights come on at dusk is a waste of money and alerts people to what you might be growing.
