I have a question watering coco. When were looking at ec or ppm obviously the feed charts are worried about whats going in but when a company says i need to maintain say a 2.0ec are we talking about maintaining that 2.0ec in the substrate itself or in the watering solution only. My substrate ec after a watering will be at 1.85ec by the next day its down to 0.3-0.5ec in the substrate. I thought the ec should go up as the media drys and not the opposite. Im lost at this point.

Nah it means the input water if your measuring your run off after every feed and itā€™s lower it means the plant is using it so all good At least Iā€™m pretty sure thatā€™s how it worksšŸ‘

No so if i feed 5.8ph 2.0ec solution my runoff is 5.8ph and right about 2.0 ec or a tad higher. But if i check the substrate itself with a ec meter the substrate itself is dropping to 0.30mS/cm which is crazy low like 200ppm I confirmed this test performing a slurry test and its always around 0.30ec unless i freshly water then it goes up to maybe 1.8ec in the substrate but by the next day im at 0.30-0.5ec again. Im feeding around 2.2ec 1200ppmish i have the issue in mother stock veg and bloom and i get purple line stems and deficiencies all throughout grow mother veg and bloom. I get heavy purpleing of the stems until 2 weeks into flower and the stems turn green but i get def's in leaves throught the rest of flower. still get killer yields but plants look like they been thru a sahara baja race by the end.

Devin,
Purpling - is it pretty much evenly spread? In other words, not associated with senescing leaves, or one particular side of one plant. If the purple signs are somewhat uniform to your grow, you might be deficient in P. One influence on phosphorus availability is your soil pH. Too acidic (<<pH 6.0), phosphorus reacts with iron and aluminum and precipitates. If soils are too alkaline (>pH 7.0), phosphorus reacts with calcium and also drops out of solution.

Coco coir is capable of a pretty hefty cation exchange rate. Maybe that is what is messing with you attempting to square - added nutrients with run off with bound nutrients.

Thanks for the info, Ya im pretty sure i have some deficiencies. The purpling is pretty much evenly spread. Not as fast of growth as should be, Most of the time its just purple lines running thru main stem and purple petiole between leaf and stem once switched into flower the stems either green up and rip or turn hard full on purple for a few weeks then get going yields still run 2.5 to 3 per light thou. Ive tried flushing them to death with half strength nutes several times. I never pretreat my coco thou and athena recommends pretreating coco to 3.0 ec prior to transplants. I just dont understand how i can only have 200ppm in the substrate with daily feedings. Not to mention on some i get really dark leaves like a nitrogen tox. Zero issues in dwc systems only have this problem in coco its friggin aggrevating to say the least

i don't get any purple in the leaf stems when growing i have seen many online coco and soil grows and some have a very dark purple it doesn't look normal and generally the leaves there attached to don't look to well either.

Devin,

Purpling - bear in mind the slight uniform purpling may be a trait of the stain you are growing. P deficiency typically results in a purpling of leaves and meristems mostly the fast growing tissue where the nutrients are being taken up at a more rapid rate and will show deficiencies quicker.

Coco - just for giggles - soak a handfull of your potted coco in distilled water for a few hours. Then measure the salts. Do the leached ions now in the water balance off the stoichiometry?
