First rdwc set up questions

Hi all,

Really quick wanted some guidance on the volumes and transfers and sizes.

I have four now eventually six plant tent , four gallon buckets so prob say max 3 gall of watering a bucket and a 7 gallon reservoir.I was thinking of 2 lines of 1.5" returns back to my rez which is actually close to my sump pump in my basement so there's actually a slight pitch back towards my res and either 3/4 or 1/2 " supply

I'm curious about what size pump for both air and the water pumps ... thank you im all for open criticism

so i'm in the middle of setting up my rdwc. the best advice for water pumps is to get a DC Sine model water pump. Here is one example. Not saying this is the best size for you or not.


the great thing about DC water pumps is they don't raise the water temp in your res. the next thing is they have a variable controller to help get that perfect flow. just make sure to pay the extra bucks for the Sine type DC pumps, the ones that aren't Sine have an annoying buzz.

for air pumps.. i have two i don't want, i could give you one if you are in VA. i'm not going to use them anymore. a commercial pump will offer a lot of power but be louder than your diaphragm types.

i'm going to use 2" return lines and a 1/2" supply line for my setup with 4 plant sites. make sure to get good bulkheads. i got some from precision marine. they came highly recommended.

Thank you so much , I picked some abs slip slip bulkheads up from unseal and home depot they have abs to pvc cement , im in connecticut I can't always venmo you whatever the cost for shipping or whatnot is . Thank you again shoot me a message when you get free thanks

Where is the placement for your supply lines?
Welcome to the farm!!! I'm doing a 4x5gallon falponic and a single w/reservoir. I've got 1" returns and 1/2 supply. If you have a few minutes, it's a good read for us beginners. ☮️ 💡

So 6 x 3 + 7 = 25 gallons of system water.

4X per hour turn is your minimum unless you are aerating every site. Even then it is a good idea.

6 pot systems are inherently uneven flow. You cannot branch off symmetrically with supply plumbing, you will always have 2 pots that get less flow. Building the system for them, I would say 2X per hour.

Now you gotta add in the length of the runs, the turns, etc. That's another 2X.

That's 400gph.

So get a DC pump like @ninjadip mentioned that has 400gph somewhere in the middle of the range. IF full aeration is not happening, get an 800gph.

So maybe nobody understood or I didn't, where should the supply lines go to ? The pebbles or just stub it jnto the pot

You want the water coming out of your feed lines above the operating waterline in the bucket, so the splashing aerates the water. How you accomplish this is sort of up to you.

First you set the pump speed with valves open full and then adjust the ones with highest flow [ slowly ] until all run even.
IMO your return lines are small. 1.5 flows aprox. 750 GPH at max gravity.

It's gravity fed return water won't stay in buckets for too long plants won't be bug enough for roots being and issue you don't want pressure on your returns anyway
