Looking to optimize the small amount of space I have to get a better yield! Have been using a Vivosun VS1000 and it's not cutting it for me. I have been told that my light is too small.

You're going to want roughly 270 watts of good LED lighting. The Vivosun you linked has the LM301 diodes so there's probably nothing wrong with the light. It's just too small for your space.

You could add a couple more of the same light you have or you can upgrade the light completely to something larger.

I think my tent would only have room for two of the bs1000s due to having the ventilation stand and filter in there. So if I got just a single LED panel how many watts do you think I should get and what would you recommend in the under $300 range?

I like the specs on the Viparspectra XS1500 Pro that Viparspectra is raffling off on the site currently. That would be perfect for his size tent and I've been hearing positive reviews from those that own them.

Their KS3000 bar style would be my choice and is within OP's budget.

I am going to check them out now. I could use the VS 1000 in a closet and do one plant with it separately.

The light dimensions are 32" x 32". Any variation in the tent size and the light might not fit correctly. Otherwise the KS3000 or similar light would be the way I would go.

Or use it in the closet to start a couple of seedlings to be moved to your 32 x 32 tent. Any chance you'll upgrade the tent size at any point in the near future? If so, this might be a time to plan accordingly with your light purchase. I'd get the largest and tallest tent your space permits. Everything is easier with more space.

32x32 is 7.1 sq ft of floor space. Multiply that by the often-recommended rule-of-thumb of 30 watts per sq ft. That results in 213 watts of power for the light. A ViparSpectra XS2000 at 240 watts would be plenty of power.

I wish I could go bigger but I'm in a small attic space in an apartment so the 32 is it!

Except that ls a board. Boards run hotter and the OP's tent is only 63" tall. It might become pretty warm in there. Bar lights don't heat up a tent as much imo.

Have you thought through your ventilation? If you could manage your tent temps, then that XS2000 would work.

I like that KS3000 but it's 32x32 so I don't think it would fit. The dimensions of the XS1500 seem small according to the specs listed. Smaller than my VS1000.

Should the light be square since the tent is square? Does it matter?
Best is an evenly lit canopy which is another reason I prefer bar lights. However, the smaller your tent the less impact it has. That XS2000 is approximately 11" x 24" ... center it in your tent and call it good. Be sure your ventilation system is enough to keep the heat in the mid 80's or lower.

I would suspect that lights using the same wattage with the same number and type of LEDs would generate nearly the same amount of heat. The main difference would likely be the dispersion of the heat. The ViparSpectra boards have heat sinks that help with that.

I doubt that matters much. You could check to see if the manufacturer provides a light dispersion pattern in its documentation. I know ViparSpectra does, but I don't know for sure what the others do.

Heatsinks are designed to release the heat into the air. It's the air that absorbs that energy, and the board design traps heat underneath it. I have both quantum boards and bar lights. The quantum boards all produce more heat and have earned a place on my shelf of unused equipment.

I run a 32×32×56 tent with as much as 400W from an Phlizon LED COB and had no problems with heat as long as I had my exhaust fan on (195 CFM). The bigger issue was distance to plants, I found it took at least 18-20" to avoid stressing the plants which is the main reason i usually use quantum boards now. Just my $0.02

PS 2/3 of the little LEDs on the Phlizon light burned out after 3 months. Boo Phlizon, boo.

Not even veg or seed sprouters? 🥸
