That makes perfect sense. I'm growing some photoperiod Durban Poison. Might go to the 1gal plastic in that case. What kinda soil are you guys using? I've been rocking ProMix HP for years now. Haven't found anything I liked better or that's cheaper. I...

I've been rocking ProMix HP for years now. Haven't found anything I liked better or that's cheaper. I used to be a fan of FFOF but Fox Farm's dirt isn't what it used to be, not even close.

It’s not, I got away from it too. I found a waaaaaay better option.

I'm working on converting to no-till for our outdoor hemp. The end goal is to transform this sandy loam to healthy black dirt, someday. It takes a couple of years but in the end it's worth it. Eventually I hope to start my own composting business, as well, to sell compost to other farmers who wish to go no-till regenerative.

Man, that’s the way to do it honestly. Quality compost sells itself quick. It’s not a bad extra to throw on top. You have a wood chipper?

No but I need one! There's a shitload of information to take in on no-till, though. I'm literally going to school for it - www.soilfoodweb.com

I had to get a couple of decent microscopes and stuff, too. I can say I am learning a lot, though. There's SO much to learn about no-till and farming/gardening in general.. It's crazy. They have discovered more information about how plants actually grow, in the past 20 years, than they have since the dawn of agriculture. The importance of fungi and bacteria in your soil is fundamental. It really makes you think twice about ever touching a synthetic fertilizer again.

Have you heard about the Amazonian super soil peat they found? If you don’t know, google that shit. The Aztecs where crazy onto something. That’s awesome you are going to soil school. It makes perfect sense in your situation, we ain’t getting any younger right? Better cram while the faculties are kicking 😂

I definitely picked the right thread to pose this question... thanks for sharing that hard earned wisdom!

Living here in post-dust-bowl country, it's really an eye-opener when you think about it. When they invented the tractor and plowed all the fungi, bacteria, and nutrients out of the soil, it literally destroyed an entire region of our country. Farmers are going to have to eventually switch to no-till, I think. The rising costs of fertilizers and the non-sustainability of current farming techniques are going to force them to switch. Which is good, because every time you till you're literally killing your soil. It all makes perfect sense if we're going to feed the growing population.

Yeah Dr. Ingham talks about this stuff I think it's discovery heavily fueled her research and work in the soil health industry
Well, that makes too much sense. Everything I have read about it. It’s gold. but underneath a few thousand years of growth and die back, other non native plants species from all over the world being brought in from travel and planted in the squares. Wild stuff. Graham Hancock has some badass interviews and symposiums on it. Your teacher sounds cool. I too am a fan of dirt. 🤣

Also I use both fabric and plastic pots. I'd love to get the aerated ones tho. But I'm bad about uppotting. 😂 I usually just stick em where they gonna grow. Probably don't listen to me. 😂

I play in dirt all the time!!

Yeah, I'm only getting older and more decrepit especially with my bad back and everything else the US Army put me through. I figure I'm only going to be able to farm for another 10, 15 years tops, so I better start figuring something out for a contingency plan. A composting business could be significantly less physical labor for myself with more payout, instead of just being a hemp farmer and catering to the cannabis industry, composting would open us up to the entire agriculture industry in general, so I think it makes sense especially this day and age, where everyone is concerned about the environment and it just makes more sense with the knowledge we have today, knowing that we can maintain soil and grow huge heavy yielding crops without the use of expensive synthetic fertilizers that do nothing but pollute and drain profits from farmers who can barely make ends meet in the first place.

Hell yeah, I'll buy some of your compost. Lol already sold me on it.

The Captain and i were joking yesterday that if you hang out in this forum long enough you will get some perspective on dirt... how right we were.
