From my experience doing mid sized outdoor grows, the more you abused any particilar plant, the more they impressed and stood out above their peers. I'm going to give this a try asap too.
I do prefer the drilling method, no chance of over splitting anything. I make one hole at the base of the stalk, turn 90 degrees go up an inch or 2 and drill again. Same effect, way less risk of hijinx. Just fyi.

I have soo many cordless drills from ice fishing, I'll go that route for sure. Less chance of cutting myself too.

Im guessing a bigger stalk = bigger drill bit. For a 1" stalk, would a 1/4" be right?

Ok, explain this drilling method
Indoor I used is a 1/8 inch bit, at the base of the main stalk a couple inches up from the medium I will drill horizontally straight through the center of the stalk. Then turn the drill 90 degrees go up a inch or two drill clean through horizontally again. No need to push anything through the stalk like skewers to keep the wound open it just is. Nails aren’t great either because they basically seal the plant off immediately and it heals negating the practice. Outdoor applications I would use a 5/8 bit or something. I do it 10-14 days from chop.

5/8 may be a bit large 😜😂

What does drilling it do? lol
It triggers the plants natural defenses, trich production being the main defense. The Dutch have been doing it for decades. Tried it 10 years ago, never turned back. Just best have them carbon scrubbers working. It brings the stink.

Damnnn.. 107!? We are cold on this side of the country... dropped to 68 and rainy today. Good news is it might let me get my nighttime temps down a bit.
