My buddy is growing a peanut butter haze clone of mine, hasn't had aphids the entire grow up until yesterday he noticed a few and now today there's hundreds. Personally, I've never had an issue with them so I'm not sure what I would do in this case. The trichomes are pretty cloudy but not yet Amber. Should he cut the plant early or let it ride and how could he reduce the amount of aphids that are infesting the plant without hurting it at this far in the grow.. I would think without the bugs it would be ready to cut in probably a week. We started our girls at the exact same time so they are very close together if anybody's been following some of my posts.

Go on natures good guys they have a chart of predator bugs that eat aphids. I believe it is green lace wings that will take care of it for you.

His tent is a 4x4, after he cuts this plant down how exactly do we clean it so we can prevent this from happening again? There are five of us in our grow circle. We all try to help each other

We looked into ladybugs and other bugs but to order them it's going to take a week to get here and that's about the time he would be cutting the tree down anyways. We are looking for something to do today otherwise he wants to cut it down and hang it. I'm trying to figure out a different solution before he makes that decision

Hydro,

Aphids are rather perishable insects, very susceptible to desiccating.

After the tent has been emptied I would thoroughly wipe down all surfaces with 5% bleach. Allow for a decent residence time, 5” or so. Then with a 90% alcohol wipe down all surfaces to remove bleach residue. This practice is good housekeeping.

Once all clean, seal the tent with nothing inside and raise the temp as much as you can. Aphids are gone.

So you don't think they are going to harm the buds at all? You can see some dry ones in there and you can kind of shake them and they just dust off.

There are little groups under some leaves and up the littler branches and then some dry ones that when you shake the bud they just fall off and they're like sawdust all over the place

The tent cleaning advice is much appreciated that's exactly what we will do. I will pull the light out not to burn the bulb, spray it down really good and maybe stick a small space heater in there with it vented good.. he's got a tiny one for a portable Fish House that will probably work perfect to keep it at about 80-85°

I would advise cleaning the tent TWICE. Do it once and wait about 4 days. That way, if any eggs hatched after the initial kill, you’ll kill them as well before they get a chance to lay another round of eggs. Piece of mind. I’m a commercial farmer and I can’t recall that one spraying has ever eradicated aphids. Two sprays usually does the job and for sure will in a tent scenario.

I’ve heard of guys spraying them with high pressure water. Washing to bugs off. I’ve never done it
If this were an outdoor grow in the middle of the Summer where it had already been rained on and susceptible to regular weather patterns, we would most likely do that exact thing. Since it's in a controlled environment indoors I'm not sure how it would react to water when the buds are extremely dense and almost ready to harvest. Spraying it in the laundry tub has been a thought.

Also look up bud washing. I’m not sure if it’s necessary but it is an option if you end until with aphids stuck to the buds. Smoking aphids doesn’t sound like a big deal to me. I’m sure I eat aphids sometimes on my greens. But, if it is a bothersome problem, I would think bud washing would work. Not recommending it, just putting it out there as an option.

Thank you very much! The other question is should we harvest the plant early due to the aphids or let it ride out another week? as the trichomes are cloudy but not Amber just a few slightly Amber ones is all. I feel like since there was only a few aphids yesterday and hundreds today there may be thousands if he lets it go another week.

Rama makes a good point. But given how perishable there insects are once the plants are removed that should remove any eggs. It’s not like powdery mildew spores.

You’ll be fine. Can’t beat clean good regular room behavior.

You guys all have excellent points! This is why we need these types of forums. I appreciate all of you guys, and so does my friend who refuses to get on any type of social media because he's still afraid of the feds. Ha ha

Hydro,

You rock!

Harvest absolutely. What’s a little insect protein between friends.
LOL that's a good one, I'm asking whether or not to harvest it a week early or let it ride the rest of the time until the Amber gets at least a third of the buds

I would wait depending on the extent of the damage as well as looking to see where the aphids are feeding. If it’s on the leaves and the population isn’t massive yet, you’ve got some time. If they are all over your calyxes I’d be tempted to harvest now.
