Hi guys,

Probably not the most popular idea, but I want to setup a "true" SoG in my 1m² tent (flood & drain table with hydroton). For that, I will need up to 40 plants per runs.

I'm considering the idea to set up a smaller tent in my attic to make my own clones and keep one or a few mothers, as needed.

If I were to do this, do you have any advices over the following concerns for this mom/clones tent:
  • how many mother plants/tent size to generate and raise about 40 clones of the same size?
  • how long would it take on average to generate those 40 clones from seeds?
  • also not sure about the hydro system for the mom(s), I feel DWC would be overkill/2 fast to manage, and do top fed rockwool cubes for the moms.
Buying seeds is the alternative, but I do not see myself buyings 120+seeds a year. It is too limiting. Also, clones are not really available in my area.

I could also settle for 20-25 plants and could veg for a little longer or top, if it's really hard to manage to get 40+ clones in the same time.

Thanks for reading and I'm really curious to hear your thoughts about it.

You could get a plant and grow it out for over two months. Top it after week 2 of growth. Take clones at week 4 you should get around 4. Take more clones at week 8 you should be able to get 8-14 clones. You should be able to take at least 15 and up for clones at week 12. If you have one mother plant. I would do four mother plants or more for variety.

Really four. Then at week 8 of making mother plants in their vegetative growth you can have your scrog completed. It might not be good but maybe two will pair good and two will pair good at well. After week 12 of making mothers you can choose two to pair together for a Scrog then two to pair for another scrog. Make the four strains an 8 week flower finisher and you can cycle it good with two scrog sites and a 5x5 area for mothers and another 5x5 for vegetative at least

Use 15 gal at least of soil to transplant for the mothers after week 8 of growth. Then use soil cubes and just clone into that. It’ll work alright. Expect like 10% to die but they won’t after awhile.

Hi Farmville,

First, many thanks for your valuable input! It's appreciated :😀

There are a couple things I would like to follow up to!

It's really more about designing a long term system than doing this only once. I realize I can't be self sufficient with clones straight from the beginning and I will have to adjust and pick a strategy for the first run, like using 50 seeds, grow moms, buy BM clones (would pref to avoid) or not do SoG and wait for my clones setup to be ready.

Scale and size : my flowering tent/drain & flood table is only 1m². At most, I can put 40-42 clones following the original SoG concept.
I can't flower in my attic due to height constraint, but I have the room there to put a new mother/clones/teens set up there. With your numbers, I get an idea about the time and frequency for clones, so thanks again!
The idea for next runs is to have enough stuff on deck when I want to start SoG downstairs. It does not have to be on perpetual flowering and I will likely try different strains and phenos before I find the right one :)

I completely realize I'm already far from the keep it simple mentality and this is not the most conventional idea. But I've done my research and I really believe in the SoG method and I would like to master it.

Thanks again for the answer and have a great day!

if anyone has any suggestions about the size or design of that mom/nursery system, I would be most grateful :)

40 plant in sog in 1 m² might not be the best option.

16 4x4 or 25 5x5 might work better and while 36 6x6 is doable sound like a lot ...

It's certainly extreme but that's following the original 4 plant per sq foot and you begin to flower when clones are rooted. I used this number as an extreme and if I can I will try this once. But doing 25-30 with longer veg time is also fine.
Thanks for your message :)

I would just get started on the moms and push your project out a month. That’s not to bad of an idea. Everything takes time if you want to do it right. Buying a bunch of clones can introduce the risk of pests and diseases into your tent for the runs after

You say buying 150 seeds a month is not viable but why dont you grow your seeds?
