So what does "it's not working" mean? Pilot not saying lit? Pilot staying lit but burner won't fire up.

If Pilot not staying lit then you can replace the thermocouple. The end of the thermocouple sits in the the flame of the Pilot which keeps a magnetic valve open. Most common problem on water heaters. Otherwise the controller may be bad but at that point if might be better to replace it.

“Not working” = pilot light comes on when button is depressed, will not remain on after button is released. I replaced the thermocouple today and put it all back together and got the same results. I whacked the control valve a couple times with my crescent (not hard) and still nothing. I made sure to keep the pilot flame on for over 30 seconds also.

To clarify you are saying if im to the point of the controller being bad it’s worth replacing the entire water heater? Im exploring options for that at the moment. Thanks a million Plumber!

How old is the heater? Usually a 1 yr warranty on controller and 6 years on tank, which is only prorated. Heaters last about 10-12 years and if the heater is near that old or older then yeah, time for a new heater.

The logical side of me is thinking this way “why spend any money on a unit that the bottom could LITERALLY fall out at any time”

ok ill go and check that! So it’s the just the tip? (Stop it!) like if the flame is burning on the middle portion of the thermocouple and the tip is past that it wont read? It may be a little further past the flame than it should. I’ll be back in a while. Thanks again plumber!

what the hell is this little deal? I jiggled a few times and pushed it a bit just because that seemed like a good idea!
I knocked all the white fluffy shit off the pilot burner
And I pulled the thermocouple out and made sure it was in its correct spot (it went right back to where it has been the whole time)

Either way I wouldn’t have gone back out there to fuck with it, if you hadn’t told me to check the thermocouple before i do anything else! thank you Plumber! Seriously, thank you

Very cool but you know the age of the heater now and know you'll need to replace it before too long because the tank will start leaking. Strat saving now. If you wanna try and replace I may be of assistance.
