Hi all,

UK based and having tea trouble germinating seeds.

Currently got one trying to germinate in the airing cupboard in a zip lock bag on a piece of kitchen towel but after three days in the dark it’s not doing anything?

I’m a total newbie to this and only grow one plant at a time as a hobby. Appreciate every seed is different but does anyone have any advice please?

Thank you in advance

Hello, first tea Time 🤣

This is one of the problems with the new marijuana strains... I place the seed between two pieces of paper towel in a tupperware, then the tupperware in a cardboard box and I place 1 (20w) heating plate for terrarium, a temperature crontroller so that it is between 20 and 22c.

After 3 days if it youre seed does not germinate.....mail Breeder And asks for a new seed

Kitchen towel or paper? If youre using textile swap to paper, thats the first problem, but it might be just a UK thing calling kitchen paper towel, I dont know hahaha.
Use a spray to moist them when theyre in between the paper, try to use osmotized water with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide. Dont get it too weet! They will rot. Its better to check them the next day and spray again if needed.
As for temperature what figolus said is ideal but you dont need a heating plate in summer. In winter I place them on top of my router inside a tupper with paper, covered by a kitchen towel so the light doesnt go in and the tupper is not touching the router directly, works like a charm.
If you wanna go the extra mile buy hemplex and add it to the water youre gonna spray. Its also great later on for foliar organic hormones.

Thanx @Eledin , You will be able to guide me, I don't use peroxide, I see a lot of people who use it. I have 100% germination rate (bulkseed or not) without peroxide. What more does peroxide bring? Sorry if m'y question IS stupid.

Thank you for your answer and to make me evolve in my culture.

Hydrogen peroxide kills any possible patogen that could be present and will also oxygenate the root if you spray the second day when its showing a little bit. It will also soften the seed from the first application before the root appears which is good, easier to open and less likely to get stucked in the soil or after it sprouts on the cotyledons. Asking questions is totally fine, Im the first one to ask the why about anything I dont know hahaha.

Sometimes when the seed is old or big it can be harder for it to be left behind, Im sure you had seeds come out with the cotyledons and had to remove them by hand. When you cant easily remove them by hand you spray them with water and try in a few hours right? If you put hydrogen peroxide in that case it will also be better. You just need to be careful with the ratio, a little bit is enough, it can burn your plant if you put too much. 1:10 ratio is a good ratio for this case, some people use more but I like to go safe.
EDIT: Forgot to say, this ratio is for 3% hydrogen peroxide. If you have a higher concentration hydrogen peroxide bottle then you have to adjust accordingly.

I used that method to germinate seeds from 2012, now I do it every time

Make up a mix of 20ml tap water / 1ml 3% peroxide, (I use a shot glass) I soak the seed for 12 hours in a dark warm place (upper cupboard, on top of your grow light etc, after 12 hours I plant the seed into a small pot, either shot glass sized solo or a cup that holds less than a cup of medium, pop her in and keep on the heating pad, put under a very weak light or far from your current light and let it rip. Usually within 24-48 hours I see a seedling,

If you’re really struggling with them you can roll up some sandpaper into a small tube, put the seed inside and shake it to scuff up the shell (scarification) then follow the same plan as above witht he water / peroxide

You wanna know something that I bet you didnt know about that method? If you use tap water, it will break down the hydrogen peroxide unless you let the chlorine evaporate. If it has chloramine instead or still has chlorine, it will break down the hydrogen peroxide but the chloramine will break down aswell into amonia which the seed turns into nitrogen for sprouting. Isnt that cool? I use osmotized water because the tap water where I live is very nasty but otherwise Id be totally cool with it.

Thanks mate, sorry yes it’s paper based just a “britishism” I think. Ok that’s great advice and I will try and apply it to my growing.

Appreciate you

All my water goes through a chlorine / chloramine / VOC inline filter off my tap / hose bib (search RV inline water filter)

Then I let the water sit in 5 gallon water jugs for 24-48 hours, that’s my water I use for eveything with the plants except washing the pots at the end lol

(Ok so not straight tap 🤣)

Right!

Ahah thank for french word 😍 . I learned Spanish at school, but I forgot everything, people most often speak English

I also use the hydrogen peroxide soak. I use a beaker and boil the water. After it cools to room temperature, I add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. Then I drop in the seeds, cover the beaker with plastic wrap and put it in a dark place for a whole day. The next day I put the seeds in soil that has been thoroughly moistened. I use a spray bottle to keep the soil moist until the seed sprouts. For photos, I start with a 4" nursery cup, then up-pot to a 1/2 to 1 gallon pot, then up-pot to its final pot.
