It depends on the growing environment, space, number of plants or even the strain. Some plants bush out well, some don't. In general, I usually try to mess with them as little as possible and just let them do their thing, especially if I'm unfamiliar with the strain's growth structure.

Outdoors I do a modified or shallow FIM that doesn't disrupt apical dominance but slows growth up top to allow a more even canopy as it grows out while maintaining a main cola.

Indoors I've used training and SCROG but finally got to the point where I just FIM it and say fuck it. If the strain bushes out well and the environment permits it then I might do more. Maybe....

I've been experimenting with a lil chocolope bonsai it's fun you can really slow and control growth with Low stress training and pruning but I've also been playing with under watering over watering and nutrient holdbacks to controls leaf and stem growth and get a feeling for what it looks like on this strain and leaf texture so I can quickly diagnose relatively accurately potential issues with my chocolope autos as there is no time or room for error with autos.

it's been in this pot for nearly 5 weeks now and is due a root pruning but I'm new to this so have been holding off until I know more... any advice on root pruning?

I use to watch a YouTuber named Nigel that bonsais lots of different plants. His process was a cleaning and separation of the root ball before he chops. I can not recall his methods beyond that
