I got a drum set in high school. Played it for a while, then gave it to a kid with POS druggy parents. The kids went on to start a cool little band and stay out of trouble through high school. I think about that drum set often. Would love to get another one some day. I know nothing compares to the real deal but have considered the electric set so I can make my noise in the room without driving the rest of the family crazy. Though I know the little would absolutely want to bang away on them too hahaha!

Are you in a band or do you just jam and what not?

I was in bands for a couple decades but then took a break when I had a kid. My wife started learning the bass and she has cool as fuck tastes, and my son is a few years into piano lessons. He’s 9. He has a double keyboard rig. I jam with them everyday. My son hates pop music and is inspired by world class musicians and often plays in “exotic” scales so I don’t get bored at all. My wife is still green but she can handle any rhythm I throw at her and has impeccable timing.

Been thinking about doing jazz gigs lately but I’m high energy late 60’s bebop style (when playing jazz) and probably wouldn’t want to lug my drums into the city just to play standards for squares and yuppy tourists..

I hate electronic drums but can understand the various reasons people use them.

That being said, there are some cool ways to make acoustic drums pretty quiet and still sound and feel WAY better than an electric kit. Cymbals are not an issue either if you buy ultra thin jazz cymbals like I do. Heavy cymbals all sound like shit in a room. They can work in recordings to be sure for many scenarios but anything other than ultra light jazz cymbals (won’t find them at a guitar center..) for acoustic enjoyment has very little if any justification aside from not being able to afford them. If you ever want to put something together and understand how to stay quiet, I’m happy to help.

A decent used kit with all the essential hardware, some sticks, new heads, creative and quality volume reduction, used jazz hats and a used jazz ride (that you would treasure and love and be forever inspired by) would set you back about 1300-1500 dollars and with some tuning coaching from me you’d sound 10x better than walking out of a guitar center having spent 2,000+ on whatever dog shit they keep laying around..

Isn’t that the truth. I’ve been to a Guitar Center a couple of times and have no intentions of going back. That place is a joke.

Yeah dude that kind of stuff needs to be made where it’s truly appreciated! : ) we have a pretty cool county wide music scene with all walks. But you can go to any great food joint on a friday or sat and get some really really good music!

Thats really cool about the fam getting into the music life. I played a little piano waaaay back in the day and tried to pick up the clarinet but those never took. Why it’s cool you posted is because the wife and I have been talking about getting the kids into music as part of their homeschooling. Like get the instruments and have lessons at the house! I can get a piano up to my place for sure but anything else we would have to really price out and hunt it down (there comes your offer into play ) 😃✌️
