Just sitting here thinking about how I am going to combat caterpillars and aphids, I think my best bet currently is to brew a compost tea and use that in conjunction with foliar sprays.

The thought just occurred to me though surely I could grow a symbiotic species that is very pungent in nature to attract the local ecosystem and distract them from my babies?

If you grow outside, consider hanging bird feeders nearby with feed that caters to the smaller birds.

They eat the seeds, but if they see other food close by, they will eat it. A soon as a small bird spots a spider, inch worm, aphid, or any other insect on your plants, they will eat it.

I use no insect repellants at all. I have a bird feeder about 20 feet away from my plants and can watch the birds go to the plants when they see something to eat.

Have a good day.

Not sure where you are located but around here if you’re outside the moths and caterpillars will wreck you if you don’t spray.

Cheers heaps man, I knew that I couldn't have possibly been the first person to think of this concept lol it just seemed to great of an idea for me to pioneer haha.

Haha I fear that may be the case for most of the world to be honest. I will be using foliar sprays at the bare minimum as I expect PM to be a problem further down the road. I am thinking of maybe introducing some native species of ladybirds as well while keeping the delicate local ecosystems in mind here as well.

I think my housemates would love that idea lol they are big fans of bird watching.

I think for companion plants I will go for lavender and coriander. Both seem to have balanced pros and cons and together I think their effect will compound and become very beneficial. Plus they are just two crops that I wouldn't mind having in my garden.

My housemates plant is already showing signs of nutrient burn and it seems caterpillars have been having a feast on his fan leaves. I tried to raise this concern with him but he seems adamant on doing his grow independently, so I will leave him alone for now as much as it pains me to watch his plant be eaten that way lol.

Totally understand! : )

Not sure if you have mentioned this to him or not : ) the caterpillars are not only eating the leaves but will also get into the buds and eat too the stem all the while pooping in them which will cause nasty rot! Thats a hard lesson learned there : ) you gonna raz him a little when he asks you for some herb!?😂😆✌️

Haha he's not much of a smoker, I think he just enjoys growing plants as he spent many years working in a commercial nursery for native flora here in Aus. I don't think he's planning on even smoking the weed he grows, just enjoys the rush of a good guerilla grow I suppose! He has been kind enough to share so many of his materials with me including his perlite, peat pucks and npk concentrate. I feel like my comment may have implied there was some animosity between us but I fuckin love that dude hes one of the most generous people you will ever meet.

We have some lavender around the yard. Not nearly as much as I would like. Thats going to be a project with the littles, we’re going to take cuttings and try and get a few potted if they root! : )

Lavender is amazing, not only is it so beautiful but its great for attracting bees and other pollinators. It's amazing for any kind of balm or topical creams, tinctures, oil extracts and so forth. It's beautiful steeped into a tea as well. Plus I have read you can use it in combination with flower in your joints and bowls for a nice smooth flavorful hit that allows you to stretch your flower without having to resort to mixing with yucky tobacco lol.

Let me know how you and the little ones go with your cuttings! Gardening is one of the most amazing family bonding activities :)

I got zero animosity out of your comment towards your roommate : ) im just being sparky this morning lol! Definitely dont piss him off over it, not even worth it. He may be even trying something out to see if it works? As long as he is enjoying himself and not struggling with it. It’s allll ggoooooddd! ✌️

Haha my nephew absolutely goes crazy whenever he sees plants that need watering. I guess he just really enjoys watering them lol.

I've been looking into a native species of plant here in Australia that's meant to have some very therapeutic anti-anxiety and sleep aid properties.
Jilungin (Indigenous name) is a bush tea made from the leaves, bark, and stems of the Terminalia canescens tree. It's native to the Dampier Peninsula in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

I'm not sure if you are interested but I highly recommend you get some seedlings going, it may be tough to dial in the perimeters obviously as this species is acclimated to the brutal Australian climate, but if you have a spare tent it should be a breeze.

I drink a cup of this tea every night and it sends me for the fences every time, I sleep too much now! I guess you could compare the effects to a very strong dose of melatonin. Plus it's all natureeel :)

I have to get real stern with the 7 year old about watering! “Son, it’s been raining for a week, the plants out there do not need watered!” Hahahah. Now come summer time, he shines, master waterer! 😄

Sorry for double posting. I missed this quote in the last post. Im very interested in natural sleep aid! My mind doesnt turn off there for sleep and I dont get along. I have to over medicate with my ganja products and that gets old.

Thanks for the recommendation! I wrote it down in my note book to look up later : ) ✌️

There's a few different Aussie websites that sell the tea mixture pre-treated if you would like to give it a try before committing yourself to a full grow. The native populations in Australia have been using this bush medicine for thousands of years, and many "witch doctors" (for lack of a better term) swear by it even more than pharmaceutical alternatives.
