Hello, I’m growing 3 photo plants from seed and 2 of the 3 are in BAS Light. This the first time I’ve tried it.
The 3rd plant is growing in Roots Organic Original.
I use dry organics and pre amend my medium and top dress during the grow. I’ve used just about every brand and variety of soil and soil/coco mixes out there…successfully for the most part.
I’ve always watered the same way. Slowly soak the entire pot to the point of a tiny bit of runoff and stop. Then I won’t water again until the pot is very light……if I’m undecided I’ll always wait.
Anyway, I figured I’d do the same with this grow, however I read the BAS literature and they suggest much more frequent waterings using 5-10% of the pot capacity.
I’m always up for trying something new, so I’ve been giving all 3 plants roughly 1/2 gal every other day. Pots are 5 gal.
They were all growing nicely until about 2 weeks ago. The plant in Roots Organic began looking too light (almost yellow) on the new growth and younger leaves.
It got worse over the past 2 weeks..
I immediately thought it could be my frequent waterings that was causing this. So i let her dry out really good and soaked the pot like I have in the past.
I allowed a bit of runoff and was shocked to see the ppm at only 430…..and my water is 150ppm. So then I thought the plant might just be hungry and due for a top dress.
I wanna flip them soon, but want to get the problem plant back on track first.
Whatta u guys think about
1. The BAS method of watering, and
2. The reason for my yellowing younger leaves?
The 3 plants are pictured below.
Thanks everyone.

I 100% support the build a soil way. You should probably up size the pots if you are going to grow living organic. The lite recipe is more for just starting seeds I would up to 15 gallons with 3.0 recipe add a bunch of basalt in with the mix. As for the light leave it look nitrogen deficient. I would also up size it tj 15 gallons. I think it would help both.

Thanks for the input….i amended the light mix with Crafts Blend, EWC and some rock dust.
I just top dressed the yellowing plant, so hoepfully she’ll get back on track.
I was gonna move to only 2 plants in 12-15 gallon pots for my next run, if I liked the BAS.
So U water like daily or every other day??

How big is your space? You might want to look at the city picker pots or the earthboxes.

I’d recommend grabbing a bag of one of Down to Earths Solution (or Soluble) Nitrogen fertalizer as it mixes with water and be available to your yellowing plant much quicker than the dry amendments (which will take weeks/months to be plant available).

You could make some faa. It will be readily available nitrogen.

Pardon my ignorance, but the older leaves are not yellow at all….actually a bit darker green. My understanding is that N is a mobile nutrient, so the plant could take from the reserves in the older lower fan leaves.
I topped dressed last week and included some worm castings which should give a quicker shot of N, if it even needs it.
If I show 10 people this plant, I’m sure to get at least 8 different answers.
I posted on another forum and the comments ranged from too much water to too much light to mag def, etc etc.
My research concluded that it’s either a PH issue and/or an Iron deficiency.
The thing is, I’ve grown for a long time, although mostly outdoors. I have rarely ran into any problems that aren’t pest related ….so I’ve never had to solve such a problem.
I think I’ll let the top dress brew for a week or 2 and see how things look.
Thanks for chiming in….in appreciate all the help.

I forgot to mention my space is a 2’x6’ closet with an 8’ ceiling.

I had some bugs in the light recipe that kept killing my seeds. I ended up dumping that batch outside because I couldn’t get a seed to live longer than a few days. Got another batch of 3.0 and the problem stopped. The bugs were something else too. I would spray them with neem or spinosad and they would come out the soil and mean mug me. Even de had a hard time killing them. The plants they didn’t kill were goofy even after killing them. One had wrinkled leaves through veg that fixed itself during flower. The other one fired off a bunch of three finger leaves and just outright looked sick its entire life. They both made it to harvest and produced some tasty buds but were rather larfy.

Sounds like springtails. They are normally not a problem but will eat the roots of small plants. They need to have plenty of organic material to break down or they will turn on the living plants. I didn’t have an issue with larfy buds ever though.

Is the new growth darker?
The new growth is the problem….its too light…..
I mean all new growth is lighter but it darkens up shortly. This is a shade too light and hasn’t darkened up. The older leaves are fine.
Only top dressed a few days ago and I haven’t noticed any change as of today. At least it hasn’t gotten worse.

If the new growth is light I would say the nitrogen is not available.

Would the plant not take the N from the older leaves? Or does it not work that way? Sorry for all the ?’s.

Sad.

You pay 17 dollars for a lb of gnarly barley flour?

I pay 2.69 for 5 lbs

Do you still have to grind yours up yourself?

Buildasoil has wrecked more gardens than anyone. And milked the fuck out of new growers filling their head with absolute nonsense. DA ENZYMES DA ENZYMES!
Sprouted barley meal is not flour. I’ve had amazing results with my living soil. But if you prefer to smoke a bunch of chemicals go ahead. I grew hydro for years before I switched. The flavors of the flower comes out way better.
