Dude I love that “organic” smell of Gaia after watering! It totally tripped me out the first time after I added to everything and then watered it in hahaha! Took me back to my couple out door grows with that natural earthy healthy smell! : )

Man I was cursed with nose like that! My wife on the other hand has a horrible nose and also works in health care so she has shit and fat people creases burned into her nostrils! so ill ask her if i smell like weed before a function or whatever and shell go “ I dunno” ok more AXE it is!

It’s a bit different than Gaia green, but very similar, living soil kinda has a… i guess you can call it compost type aroma, not nasty or dirty smelling, more like super fresh soil, but noticeable that organics are breaking down, like figure ingredients in the craft blend being broken down, there’s a lot of meals, bran, flours, oats, get those wet, mixed together and you kinda get the idea,

Another thing I like is their views on true organic imputs, and sustainability, I gotta find that podcast he explained a lot of his reasonings, I was passing out listening to it so I missed the 2nd half I’ll have to catch up on it.

Actually here it is! Kinda a breakdown in how he started the buisness, what his goals were why he chose certian imputs, etc was a good listen if you’re interested in the basics of living soil and moving in that direction it kinda clarified the different levels of “organics” are I was very suprised to see the true differences to what most people call “organic” vs what living soil folks call Organic as far as the physical media involved

He really explains why not all like meals are the same, if you wanna be full living soil organic you gotta trace all the way back to the imput’s origin, he was explaing one of them I can’t remember which, but he was explaing how he didn’t use one option because at some point that was sprayed with pesticides when it was growing, then an industry extracts what they needed from it, it then becomes a meal, and ALL meals leftover are considered “safe for organic farming” so there’s HUGE hidden component if you are really trying to avoid all aspects of the pesticides and herbicides etc

The side by side comparison is crazy.

usually im not so "coochie coo" on em right off the bat. i let em get a little leggy and a bit hungry, a little hardened off. But with these batches im phenotype hunting for breeding, and may even make some culls in veg. I wanna see what they got right out the gate.

Out of the 24 seedlings i started im expecting to have 3 maybe 4 females im going to do something with breeding wise, and 1 maybe 2 males. And 16/24 of them share the same haymeadow father already. That hunk practically ran a harem last fall.

A heating pad is a necessary item for any avid horticulturist to ensure the proper temperature of the seeds being stored [in red solo cups in dirt waiting to sprout].

I’ve never had a problem with the mat temps uncontrolled, even if I set right on them, I’ve tried a few things placing sheet pans between the mat and pots etc dosent seem to make a difference,

What I’m wondering is what everyone sets those controller temps to when they do have them

Hard to tell in the pics, trichs never look right in em lol, but knowing her and her mom and judging on the buds best I can i would probably leave that another week or so.

Same here, I look at them like tomatoes, let ‘em stretch then bury the stem, they’ll root all the way to the soil surface, and just expands the root ball by that much more

I don’t like to bury too much at once maybe an inch then wait 2-3 days then another inch if they stretch that much

i just set seeds in a paper towel in a zip lock on my stereo amp. Usually have roots pop within 24-48 hours, then i plant em and put the cups under the light and have seedlings in another 24-48hrs

That’s probably because it’s zoomed image and then a zoom image. I can’t tell anyway if it was a good image.

My iPhone zooms up to 5x I found out if you increase all the way to 5x then reduce back to 4.6-4.7x and then use distance as the focus you get some decently nice pics

But I’ve always had the same issue with trichs off phone pics, sometimes you can get it just right but really if you wanna see those trichs I suggest a Wi-Fi digital microscope for $30 off Amazon

Zoom method example at 4.7x

Digital microscope at about 60x with capability up to 500x as well as 3 levels of zoom on top of that, we’ll worth the few mucks to eliminate the guesswork , these are with me holding the camera with my hand, middle finger holding the bud up to the scope and left hand taking the pic with my phone through Bluetooth

Takes a bit to get used to but you just gotta mess with the angles and light levels a bit on the camera to not wash out the trichs like the first scope pic

Nah my only concern I had was it dried out the medium quick, besides that they seemed to love the heat, I usually keep ‘em on the mat for about 2-3 days after they sprout then I remove it

I'm smelling brand flakes right now mixing 4 gallons up to easily the easiest nutrients to mix in my tap water 2 teaspoon 4 gallons n one shake of potassium bicarbonate n she's g2g

I never did either, but I liked to keep ‘em warm, Especially when the seeds are soaking, usually I set the cup with water (I don’t do paper towels I do 12-18 hours soaked in 20:1 water : peroxide set on my heat duct in the basement in winter, or on top of a light if the furnace is off, then straight into the soil

My SF600 in the 4x8 over the mothers is an awesome heat trey lol

But once I got the mats I started using them and just never stopped


Oh an I like the shot glass sized solo cups for seed starting with 3x 1/8” holes drilled in the bottom

I understand that’s not always an option so I appreciate the efforts he puts into it on his end.

Yeah I run organic but… I like tinkering

i use the 20-20-20 for veg. I like being able to slow my plants way back without excess deficiency, and i like being able to boost them into explosive growth without N tox.

N tox will stall a plant but most can take a little mineral burn here and there and barely even flinch.

I run the 20-20-20 until the end of stretch usually. Then i start tinkering with specific ratios for specific plants. Because im a crazy person that tends to have like a dozen or more unique plants going in clone at a given time with a single veg setup and two small flowering tents.


The high n low P feeds do tend to veg plants out a little faster, but you cant dial em back much without deficiency, and they take longer to recover from it once it expresses then even ratios.


You can even use the 202020 jacks as a foliar feed to help keep plants happy while diagnosing issues. And it can help turn them around once its corrected a lot quicker as a foliar too.

I just keep coming back to the even ratios for veg because my plants just look happier with it. And it better suits my style of growing when it comes to veg.

It takes a TON of even ratio feed to burn a vegging plant too. Give em more and they just kinda grow faster, even if they get a little mineral burn. They never N tox and stall out. Give them less and they just grow smaller and slower, with little to no deficiency.
