Hi farmers,

I'm in late flower with four Lemon Pie autos, 50/50 hybrid, from Fast Buds, my first grow. I think it's like 2-3 weeks now until the first buds mature or so, the trichs are still clear and seem to take forever to start turning cloudy but some buds are turning purple and swelling. I defoliated some in bits during late flower because the canopy was, and is, very dense and I was advised doing so to get more light exposure to the bud sites and ensure that the air moves better. There are so many flowering branches in my 60 x 120cm (2 x 4ft) tent that the colas are almost brushing against each other here and there.

For some reason there are new shoots growing from down below the canopy, and there are quite a few of them. They try to grow through the canopy to get some light and start making buds. Some have even made some buds that aren't even that small, but mostly they seem quite hopeless. It looks like the plants just arbitrarily decided to make new set of flowers.

I've been wary of removing those to not stress the plants. I could always make some cannabutter from those when I harvest if they stay small. Then again they're taking up space that's already scarce, some pushing through the canopy and competing for light with the older shoots.

What's your take on the subject of removing or not removing those shoots, or what to do with them? Pros and cons of keeping or slaying them? Have you had plants do this?

I can post some pics if you think that's necessary.

Quality vs quantity. If you have put the effort into creating an even canopy you're probably putting greater emphasis on quality, right? So whatever the plant is putting below, it is borrowing from the potential on top. Pinch them off as soon as they try so it's not exerting plant energy growing where you don't want it to grow.

The pro side of leaving some of that undergrowth is more quantity at the risk of sacrificing some of the quality. If you are okay with slightly less dank buds for the benefit of some additional larf you can get se to make edibles, you can leave them.

The more buds a plant grows, the less magnificent the ones they grow on top and overall.

Makes sense. On this grow the canopy isn't particularly even, though it's not totally off the whack since they're bushy autos, so short plants. So, if they're really taking the resources away from the bigger buds ig it's best to remove them. I'm just afraid of my plants herming, I've been told autos do that more easily, but maybe it's okay and they'll be fine.

If you're only 2 weeks away from harvest leave it. It's too late to really benefit the other buds in a meaningful way when you consider the stress it puts on the plant at a crucial time. If you were just about to flip I would say the opposite.

You and the plant worked really hard to get to where you are. If it's got trichomes on it at this point why would you throw it away?

Just my .02

Fair points. It's quite hard to estimate the harvest time though and the buds are ripening quite unevenly, meaning I might need to harvest in bits. But I get the idea, there's a balance to strike between the hit from stress and the possible hit from resource competition in relation to expected benefit from removing that resource competition.

Hey man i'm dealing with mold inside those really tight little autos i'm grown now. Thankfully only on 2 and i search for it now 2xday. So do yourself a favor and snip those lower ones i don't mean all of them just those knocking against eachother. Mine are just about done but the heat & moisture really gets trapped between the soil and low hanging branches as they get fuller and older.

If you leave them lowers, that's usually where herming will happen yeah. But it doesn't mean it will, it's just an increased risk in that mediocre region.

If you're harvesting in bits then just chop the tops when they're ready and let your bottom ripen after when they have all the light. Maybe that's the best of both worlds. 🤔

Pick the ripe parts when they're ripe, love it. Done it. Sometimes gotta. The bummer side is resigning to drying trays instead of hanging branches. I just don't ever seem to get as good a smell that way.

I've actually been keeping my eye on them aince I kinda don't trust them. I once found something that could have been a spade but I instinctively immediately removed it and squashed it so I didn't have the time to unspect if that was actually the case. Haven't seen others so likely just an overreaction from my part.

IF they dont steal light and dont make it too tight i would leave them.no point in trimming them all for butter.they make some nice cookies

If they really dont have light they will stay yellow.

Thanks for the heads up! I just got two fairly effective blowers to keep the air moving but this is something to consider. The colas most proximal to each other are some older ones though, but the new ones still occupy space and may pusht those closer to each other. Also, in a small tent like mine with a lot of plant metabolism going on the humidity is hard to maintain within optimal range.

Maybe I'll try leaving there as many as I can justify when considering airflow, light and space, snd then harvest in bits as the colas ripen. That way I could het even the lower ones make more active ingredients even though I'll throw them to a kettle. I get some stronger cookies. Or fudge, fudge is also nice.

Yeah just watch them like for airy growth buds where the calyxes aren't really opening up, sometimes that's where they try and sneak a banana in there.

Thanks, I wouldn't have known! Gotta keep my eye on those.
