I’m growing out my leg hair, loosely curling my knuckles, and practicing my grunts so that I can grow a plant outside. I have a free auto seed I want to transplant into a big hole filled with something. The bag the guy at the grow store recommends is $37, but this 50 quart bag at Costco is only $9.95. Without knowing what I’m talking about, it seems like it should work pretty well. It’s organic and doesn’t have any slow release nutes. What do y’all think?

I would go with a cheap one! I have yet to see an auto that’s worth spending 40 bucks on!😈😂

Yeah but Costco has Miracle grow if I'm not mistaken. I think the nutes in it are to slow release for autos.
Have you checked local nurseries?

I don’t think that one does! Kelp, bonemeal, alfalfa, meal, etc. are all slow release! But it looks like it’s meant to be mixed in with the native soil! Or your existing soil! As a supplement!

Never mind.
I just got home and decided to look at the reviews for it on Costco.com. Apparently this stuff is garbage—literally. People are finding nails, plastic, and other trash in it, and some are getting bad gnats and poor growth. I’m sure reviews aren’t perfect for any soil, but the amount of one star ratings for this stuff makes me want to run away.
So I will.

The guy at the grow store, who I just met, sold FF soils, but when I told him what I wanted to do, he recommended a soil produced by a semi-local maker that came in a few different strengths. He said for an auto the lightest one was probably best. He said it's what he's used for years in all his outdoor grows with tremendous success. I'm in a small town and he seemed pretty straight up*, so I was going to trust him. It was a big bag for $37, but I didn't get the name nor recognize it. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I don't need anything that big, so I'll check what the FF bags sold for first. He had Happy Frog and Ocean (something). Which would I need for this? If it's successful I may do it again in the future, but only with autos. There are bright sodium vapor lights 40 yds away on both sides of my yard, so I would think that would affect photos at night? If my little seed sprouts and does well in its solo cup, I'll swing by the store again and get the name of that local stuff.
*I needed some ph down and was going to get some Advanced Nutrients since he didn't have GH in stock, but instead he sold me some CES for $6 less and also because he had found the ph didn't climb as bad on him after mixing it. I'm always leery of salesmen, but he seemed okay.

Water only living soil mixes in my area will run $35-$40 a bag. I've never used it. I always thought it was too expensive.

A 1.5 cubic foot bag of Ocean Forest + about an extra 10% perlite will fill three 5 gallon fabric pots. Hopefully that transfers to other soil mixes.

Is Coast of Maine sold in your area? It comes in several varieties but its my understanding its a highly regarded potting mix.

Was he cute?

Why don't you just get a 5gal fabric bag for just 1 auto flower? Why hassle with being inground with all the bugs and other weather problems you may run into. You could move it safetly.

My neighbor would put his fabric pot in a wagon so he could move it into the garage on cold or wet nights. He'd hook up his garden tractor and pull them in.

Well, if you’re going to make completely sound and reasonable arguments, I don’t know how to react. I mean I already have the bags, 5 and 7 gals, a garage to move it to, and the knowledge I’ll need to move this plant at times, but still… there was something cool about the idea of just plopping it in the ground. I guess it would be a lot cooler if it was a photo that would grow 7 feet tall.

This is what I should do. I do have an extra wheelbarrow…

Big plants can be more trouble than they are worth. They tend to attract the worst kind of pest ... 2 legged pests. You really don't want your plant to be seen by anyone other than those in the household.

I’ve heard this is a real problem around here too. I was going to hide my little auto with some sunflowers I potted in solos along with the weed.
