If I'm fertigating with and automatic drip system is it okay to add plain ph'd water around the edges where the Halos don't get? Will that throw off the balance of the root zone? Or is good to keep all wet and get rid of salts? First post, somewhat newbie

If you're putting enough through with the halos to get run off the edges will wick moisture from the rest of the pot. It's never a terrible idea to run some plain ph water through but you shouldn't have to unless you're getting heavy salt buildup.

And if you're getting heavy salt buildup, you should run more through the halos.

I've read numerous times not to use plain water in coco something to do with cation exchange 🤷‍♂️
I thought I should mention it's allegedly not a good idea idk how accurate that is you might want to check it out.

Thank you. I don't see any salt or ph problems. I don't want to add any more irrigation lines. I did start adding some Raw Yucca powder to my rez, a wetting agent that I heard might help disperse the water evenly. Ok, so running more thru the halos will help if there's too much salt. I see. I still feel hesitant about pouring plain water around the dry edges.

That's what I'm concerned about, cation exchange. They can only take up so much nutrients because we're are in control of that root zone and what they are getting. That E.C and PPms need to be in the right range at all times from what I heard when feeding in coco, every time theyre fed. Apparently, Ph'd water with-out any nutes can throw off that exchange and roots. All hear say. I wish I can hear more thought. Thanks for the return. Much appreciated gro!

Are you using the hydro halos as a constant drip or a cycle on and off?

Cycle on and off. 2x a day till 10-20% run-off each time. I've tried a few schedules and right now it's working @week5 just right. Took time to dial in. I'm sure they're going to need more to drink soon too. I tried more frequent @4-5 times with 35 sec interval. I couldn't get my rez to last more than I days. Now, 2x a day at a slow drip of 4minutes each is working. What are you thinking about the halos? Thank you

Rez would last 2-3 days. Now 5-7 days

I've been using them for years and I love them. I use them exactly like you do. You only have to get to the 20% runoff by the last watering of the day so if you do two cycles get 10% and 10%. Or if the one in the morning gives you zero runoff (which in my opinion is totally fine) make sure the second one gives you 20%

I grew a 13oz dry weight plant in a 1 gallon container fertigating 16x a day. They are the secret sauce in drain to waste coco.

Good luck and keep us posted on the results. 💚

And go with the faster flow for less time not drops, that's why the sides of your pots seem dry I think. Mine usually feed for like 10 to 15 seconds max at a pretty good flow rate. The holes are angled so the water will also spray outwards toward the edges but it doesn't work unless under a bit of pressure.

There's a vid at the end of this Post where you can see a good flow rate for the halos.

Thank you. You've been very informative. I will try what you said and tinker with the run-off. Happy Growing!

Using plain water on coco aside as mentioned above the nutrient will wick out to every crevice guaranteed.
Imo Using water isn't a good idea because it'll alter the ec of the nutrient you're using?

I've a handful of plants here that aren't too important they'll most likely be going into the bin.

On Monday evening I rinsed 2 of the plants with roughly 5/6x the pot volume using plain water.

They look fine today i don't anticipate that changing but we'll see?

Sounds good. Let me know if you see any changes. Im curious. . I just threw away 3 dwarfs myself. I learned NOT to use those Jiffy Pellets the hard way smh.
